Week 8 of the NFL season begins with a tilt between playoff hopefuls in the NFC. The Carolina Panthers are in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where they take on the Packers at Lambeau Field. The visitors’ offense runs through the passing attack, but they’re one of few teams with a true bell-cow in the backfield, too. What will Chuba Hubbard do against this run defense?
Here’s the best Chuba Hubbard prop bet for Panthers vs. Packers on Thursday Night Football in Week 8.
Best Chuba Hubbard prop bet for Panthers vs. Packers
It’s been a resurgent season for Chuba Hubbard. If you believed some of the hype out of Panthers training camp back in August you’d have thought he’d practically be dead on arrival given the drumbeat that grew in favor of backfield mate Jonathon Brooks. However, the veteran was deployed as the starter in Week 1 while the younger back was injured in the second game, landing him on IR. As such, Hubbard took over the backfield and has enjoyed a real bell-cow role ever since.
He’s made the most of those opportunities, too. Just a couple of seasons ago, Hubbard showed his ability to lead an offense with nearly 1,200 rushing yards and 11 total touchdowns. Now, he’s seemingly recaptured that magic – he has 459 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground this season, averaging 4.8 YPC in the process. That’s good for an average of 76.5 rushing yards per game across his six contests. He’s also been solid as a receiver, too, catching 15 of his 18 targets for 112 more yards and two scores. As a whole, that brings his scrimmage yardage to 571 with six total TDs on the campaign.
Now, he gets what could be an enticing matchup despite playing on the road. How will he fare on Thursday Night Football?
On DraftKings Sportsbook, Hubbard’s player prop bet lines are set at O/U 16.5 rush attempts, 67.5 rushing yards, 2.5 receptions and 16.5 receiving yards. His odds of an anytime touchdown are set at -120 as of the time this article was written, second shortest of any player in this matchup. As for the game lines, the Panthers are a 3.5-point underdog with the total set at 47.5 combined points.
Green Bay’s defense falls in the middle of the pack with an average of 115.0 rushing yards allowed per game, while the 3.9 YPC allowed is on the lower side. However, there’s a key stat to know heading into this matchup that may provide some reasoning as to why this is a solid matchup for Hubbard. The Packers allow a rushing success rate of 52.1% that ranks third worst among all NFL defenses. While their 9.2% explosive rush rate allowed is tied for the sixth-best mark in the league, they’re not great on a down-to-down basis against the run.
Hubbard has handled a large workload this season with double-digit carries in five of his six appearances, averaging 16.0 rush attempts per game. He’s running the ball efficiently with his opportunities and has three games in which he’s exceeded this line of 67.5 rushing yards, including a pair of performances with 100+ rushing yards against the Lions and the Eagles. Looking at the opposition, the Packers have given up at least 100 rushing yards in four of their seven games this season, too. Given his tight grasp on the lead role and the volume he sees, Hubbard should be able to eclipse 67.5 rushing yards in this one. His own rushing success rate of 57.3% ranks sixth among 44 qualifying halfbacks, too, so that should serve as further reason to believe he can get the better of this run defense.
Best Bet: Chuba Hubbard over 67.5 rushing yards (-112)
