It’s too early in the season to read too much into the NFL standings, but there are several division races that could be tight. Right now, all four teams in the NFC North are currently in a playoff position, which would be a first in league history if it holds up over the full season. In the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers lead at 3-3 in their quest for their second straight division title, but the 3-4 Atlanta Falcons are making a charge.
Carolina will have a chance to make a statement tonight on national television when they travel to face the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football at 8:15 p.m. ET.
The Panthers are 3.5-point underdogs for tonight’s matchup at DraftKings Sportsbook (+160 on the Moneyline), with the point total set to 46.5. Green Bay is -192 on the Moneyline.
Below, I’ve detailed my prop bet centered around Carolina WR1 Tetairoa McMillan for tonight’s nationally-televised showdown.
Best Tetairoa McMillan Prop Bet on DraftKings Sportsbook
Tetairoa McMillan 6+ Receptions (+103)
McMillan has only had six or more catches in two of his six games this season, but those two came in his last three games. He had a monstrous 14-catch, 192-yard, two-touchdown effort in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions and followed it up after the Panthers’ Week 5 bye with a six-catch, 86-yard performance in the Week 6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. He was held to a quiet four catches and 40 yards in Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but in that game, Carolina pulled many of its starters early because of the lopsided score line.
McMillan should continue making himself an appealing target. One season after becoming the Panthers’ first rookie 1,000-yard receiver since Kelvin Benjamin in 2014, he ranks 11th in the NFL in receiving yards per game and receptions per game. By Pro Football Focus’ standards, he’s been the 15th-best among 118 qualified receivers. McMillan has produced an average of 2.8 yards of separation per targeted route, a slight uptick over the 2.7 mark he posted last season, and Bryce Young has been slightly more accurate relative to expectations than he was last season.
On paper, Green Bay has a talented secondary, but it hasn’t been so good at stopping wideouts this season. In fact, the Packers have allowed more receptions to the position than any other team, and while that’s largely a function of volume, two teams have allowed more targets to wideouts. They have mostly given up short throws, and McMillan is more of a short- and intermediate-yardage possession receiver than Jalen Coker, Carolina’s other preferred target. Green Bay’s top cornerback, Keisean Nixon, is questionable with a shoulder injury, and even if he plays, he’s given up 37 completions in coverage, the most of any player in the league.
