What Happened Before Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection? Season 1 Recap

After a successful first season of Dexter: Resurrection, the popular show following serial killer Dexter Morgan is returning! The upcoming season is the 12th overall in the Dexter universe and the second consecutive season of Dexter: Resurrection. This is the first time since 2011 to 2013 that we have had three straight years with a season of the Dexter franchise.

Before Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection comes out, let’s take a look back at Season 1 and break it down.

Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 Trailer

“This is hardly the life I’d imagine I’d have in my 50s,” Dexter said in the trailer. Although Dexter seems confident in who he is now, he still appears to be evaluating how his life has played out up to this point. A veteran serial killer, the New York Ripper appears to be one of Dexter’s main targets this season.

Then, at the end of the trailer, Dexter says, “I’m older, I’m wiser; things are gonna get messy. But if I can’t believe in myself, I can’t believe in anything.” Another familiar face from Dexter’s past, Joey Quinn, appears in the trailer. Once again, Dexter’s two worlds are colliding.

Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 Recap

As always, the first season of Dexter: Resurrection delivered on everything fans could have hoped for and more. It was an excellent season that did a tremendous job picking up where we left off with Dexter Morgan at the end of New Blood. At the end of Dexter: New Blood, Morgan was left lying on the ground and was bleeding out, making it highly unlikely the show could return. Dexter: Resurrection picks up with Morgan waking up after a 10-week coma. Since Morgan was bleeding on the snow-covered ground, he survived.

Dexter finds himself in a rehab facility but quickly realizes he needs to leave before people start to question him. He escapes the facility and immediately makes his way to New York City, where his son, Harrison, is. Harrison is mad at Dexter after learning his true identity at the end of New Blood. Throughout the first season of Resurrection, Dexter tries to mend his relationship with his son, and they eventually grow closer.

We saw Harrison deal with his own “dark passenger,” and his father helped him control his violent urges. Upon Dexter’s arrival in New York City, it didn’t take long for him to hunt down serial killers who have hurt innocent people. After killing Ronald “Red” Schmidt, Dexter began to take on his identity when he realized he was part of a special group. Dexter then joined the group’s periodic meetings hosted by billionaire Leon Prater. Although Prater brought the serial killers together to bond, Dexter had other ideas. Dexter killed Gareth Pike (The Gemini Killer) and Mia LaPierre (Lady Vengeance) from the group before eventually taking out Prater.

In the Season 1 finale, Prater finally learned Dexter’s true identity after his former coworker, Angel Batista, told him. Prater led Dexter to his hidden vault where he stored memorabilia from many serial killers. Then Prater wanted Dexter to kill Batista, but he wouldn’t, as it was against the code. Dexter tried to help Batista by letting him off the table he was tied to, but Prater eventually shot him. Prater then held Harrison hostage before Harrison used Dexter’s signature syringe to put him to sleep. Dexter then had Prater right where he wanted him on a table instead, his vault wrapped in plastic wrap before killing him. Before the cops came and found the crime scene, Dexter escaped and went to Prater’s yacht to dispose of the body.

“I used to wish I could be different, normal. A life without my dark passenger. But who am I kidding? This is who I am, what I am. I’m Dexter Morgan. I’m exactly who I need to be, exactly who you want me to be,” Morgan states in the final scene of Dexter: Resurrection Season 1. This was a perfect ending to the first season of Resurrection because it was an excellent moment when he realized he was done trying to be someone he wasn’t. For so long, he tried to live multiple lives to fit into normal society, but now it seems Morgan won’t do that moving forward.
