The NBA is in the middle of an unprecedented stretch of parity, as no team has repeated as champion since the 2016-18 Golden State Warriors. In fact, since the 2018-19 Warriors, no defending champion has even made it back to the NBA Finals in the following season.
Tonight, the New York Knicks will celebrate their accomplishments in 2025/26 before the hard work of breaking that historic trend begins in earnest. New York’s first NBA Championship banner since 1973 will be raised to the rafters ahead of tonight’s 7 p.m. ET tipoff against the new-look Philadelphia 76ers.
Jalen Brunson, whose 45-point closeout game in this summer’s NBA Finals cemented his Finals MVP, will surely be at the center of the festivities as the Knicks’ captain, and the offense will run through him on the court again this season. New York will need him to produce another brilliant season if it hopes to repeat.
The Knicks are 4.5-point favorites for tonight’s matchup at DraftKings Sportsbook (-180 on the Moneyline), with the point total set to 231.5. Philadelphia is +150 on the Moneyline.
Below, I’ve detailed my Brunson-centered prop bet for those looking to get in on the action.
Best Jalen Brunson Prop Bet on DraftKings Sportsbook
Jalen Brunson 30+ Points (+160)
When Brunson fails to score 30, it’s less about his ability than it is about his desire or the game situation. He reached that threshold in 26 of his 74 regular season games, but he finished the postseason with nine 30-plus-point efforts in his last 15 games, including each of the final three games of the Finals. It might be unrealistic to expect his regular season minutes load and usage to touch his usage in the postseason, especially if Mike Brown has an eye on managing his stars’ workload after a truncated offseason, but Brunson bears a heavy offensive load in the regular season too. He averaged just 1.9 more minutes per game in the playoffs than in the regular season.
The 76ers made major changes during the offseason, swapping Paul George for Jaylen Brown and adding LeBron James in free agency. However, I’m not sold on their defense in general; George graded out as a significantly better defender than Brown in 2025/26 and James posted a negative DRAPM for the first time in his career. All told, Philadelphia added two net-negative defenders to a lineup that already ranked just 17th in defensive rating last season.
VJ Edgecombe did an excellent job guarding Brunson last regular season, holding him to just 21 points on seven-for-23 (30.4%) shooting across 106.7 partial possessions, but Brunson got his get-back during the playoffs, dropping 44 points on 15-for-25 (60.0%) accuracy in a nearly identical sample size. He scored at least 30 points against Philadelphia four times in eight games between the regular season and the playoffs (+100 implied odds), and in two of those games, he played fewer than 30 minutes because of a lopsided score line.
