The NBA is officially back in action on Tuesday. At 7 p.m. ET, there’s an Eastern Conference clash between the reigning champion Knicks and the 76ers, who loaded up with star talent this offseason and are looking to challenge for a title. While he’ll share the floor with some other high-usage superstars, Joel Embiid will surely play a huge role this year as usual – assuming he can stay healthy.
Here’s the top Joel Embiid player prop on DraftKings Sportsbook for tonight’s 76ers vs. Knicks matchup.
Best Joel Embiid prop bet pick
He’s no longer the MVP talent he once was, but Joel Embiid showed plenty of promise last season as his numbers ticked back in the right direction. Granted, he played just 38 games in total, but his counting stats certainly looked better than in the prior campaign. He averaged 26.9 points with 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists, seeing positive regression in his shooting splits as he amassed a 48.9% FG% and a 33.3% 3P%. He looked like his old self at times, including a dominant stretch in January during which he posted nearly 30 PPG.
The injury woes have always been the story for Embiid, so managing his health this season is sure to be a central focus. He’s played no more than 39 games over the last three years, but the good news is that he has plenty of star power alongside him to help shoulder the load now. After adding Jaylen Brown via trade and LeBron James via free agency, there’s less of a reliance on Embiid to play such a major role on a night-to-night basis in order to win.
Tonight, though, he’s healthy and should be good to go. We’re yet to see more than glimpses of how this offense will shake out in terms of the pecking order – sharing the floor with the aforementioned Brown and James alongside Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe obviously means some players will see fewer touches – but there’s obviously an avenue for Embiid to put forth a quality outing here.
The Sixers are on the road at Madison Square Garden to face the Knicks, who notably lost Mitchell Robinson this offseason. He was just the backup center behind Karl-Anthony Towns, but he was a very good one on the defensive side of the ball. At first glance, this may not be the most imposing matchup since last regular season, Embiid averaged 32.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in two games against the Knicks while shooting 61.1% overall and 50.0% from deep. He also took an astounding 24 free throws across those outings.
The postseason was something of a different story. Embiid averaged 18.7 points with 5.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists over the course of three games as the 76ers were swept out of the playoffs. Keep in mind that he had his appendix removed prior to the postseason and could’ve still had some degree of discomfort just a few weeks removed from surgery, but even still, it was a concerning trend to see the downturn in his output.
One can expect the big man to still handle a fairly large workload tonight in the season opener, but it’s probably safer to target his rebounding props instead of scoring. Embiid pulled in 36 total boards over his five games against the Knicks between the regular season and postseason sample, good for 7.2 rebounds per game. He failed to record over 7.5 rebounds in three of those five games, too. It may be a smidge risky here, but I’d actually rather take the under on this prop line tonight based on those previous outputs and since New York has plenty of talented rebounders in the mix still.
Best bet: Joel Embiid under 7.5 rebounds (+108)
