The story of the Nike Caitlin 1
The Nike Caitlin 1 is the much-anticipated first signature sneaker for Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark. The former Iowa Hawkeye is arguably one of the most well-known athletes in the world, with fans and detractors alike everywhere, so to say people have been looking forward to this shoe is an understatement.
Nike says the Caitlin 1 was built with CC22’s speed, range and unpredictability in mind. Of the Caitlin 1 Nike says:
The Caitlin 1 introduces a new Nike Opticast upper, which delivers lightweight, locked-in support so Clark and players like her can push the tempo without feeling weighed down. The innovative construction of cast polyurethane nodes across varied heights is designed to reduce drag and enhance on-court efficiency, all with a visual language inspired by the ripple of the three-point arc.
Caitlin and her signature sneaker’s designers went into greater detail about the design in a video released by Nike.
As noted above, the Caitlin 1 introduces the Nike Opticast upper, which was designed to deliver lightweight, locked-in support. That upper also has specific design details from Caitlin herself that speak to her dual identity, featuring C’s and 2s as well as a stacked Swoosh. Additionally, the Caitlin 1 features messages on the outsole that Nike says capture her sharpshooter mentality — “Shoot More Threes,” “From Anywhere” and “It Was Never a Long Shot.”
In addition to looking good, the shoe has to be able to perform on the court. The Nike Caitlin 1 features a forefoot Air Zoom Turbo unit as well as a Cushlon midsole. In a press release, Clark says:
“I hope every boy and girl put this shoe on and hope that they can have a signature one day, or that they can go on the court and make 35-foot threes,” says Clark. “I hope this gives them that sense of belief and that sense of confidence to achieve whatever they want to.”
Clark says she and Nike were “trying to make the best shoe there’s ever been.” Without having tried the shoe on, at the very least you can see that the effort was there. Based on the video above, Clark was involved in the design process extensively and didn’t budge when it came to giving her the product she wanted. That’s a good thing — Michael Jordan was famously hands-on with Tinker Hatfield during his playing days. Nike is taking the best of its technologies and putting it into this shoe, knowing that if it wants to convert Clark fans into dedicated Swoosh fans it will have to perform. The appearance isn’t bad either, as the waves in the upper sort of give almost a Foamposite vibe. The initial colorways are a little one-note, but it appears like there is room to get a little crazy.
Caitlin has already had several Kobe Protro PEs drop, and I questioned whether that was a good thing for Nike. Reebok beat Nike and Caitlin to market with an Angel Reese signature sneaker and two years is a long time to wait for this first signature model. Ultimately, I think Caitlin’s signature sneaker was always going to sell thanks to her large fan base. The key question is whether the shoe will be good enough to make it one of Nike’s top hoops shoes year in and year out. We’ve already seen hoopers — both men and women – embrace Sabrina Ionescu’s line (I can affirm from personal experience that these are among the best hoops shoes on the market). If Nike could have that same on-court success with the Caitlin line that would be great. Even better would be if Nike could find off-the-court traction for the model as well.
Hoops shoes aren’t nearly as prevalent off-court as they used to be in the 1990s, and Nike is probably banking on Caitlin and her popularity giving that segment of its business a major boost. I look forward to seeing whether the Caitlin 1 has slam dunk success.
