West Virginia Preview
West Virginia has started the season strong. They had a tricky opening week game against Coastal Carolina, then played UT Martin and finished the non-conference slate with a really tough game against Virginia. The Mountaineers defeated the Cavaliers at a neutral site, putting up 437 yards in the process. Former Oklahoma quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. has done an excellent job of running this Rich Rodriguez offense. Now, Hawkins starts Big 12 play against his former in-state rivals from his time as a Sooner.
Oklahoma State Preview
It’s hard to know who this Oklahoma State team is. After moving on from the Mike Gundy era, Eric Morris was given the tough task of building this program back up. The former North Texas coach brought a lot of his old Mean Green players with him to Stillwater, including star quarterback Drew Mestemaker. Things couldn’t have gone worse for the Pokes to open the season, losing to Tulsa in Week 1. However, they followed that up with an incredible upset win over Oregon. The Cowboys have a great quarterback, and if they play like they did against Oregon, they could compete in the Big 12 this season. This will be a big road test against good Big 12 competition.
West Virginia vs. Oklahoma State Pick, Best Bet
My best bet is on the West Virginia Moneyline. The Mountaineers’ offense is humming through three weeks. They rank 12th in the nation in offensive EPA/pass. Michael Hawkins Jr. has been efficient through the air and explosive on the ground. In comparison, Oklahoma State ranks 109th in the nation in offensive EPA/pass. Mestemaker is capable of creating explosive plays through the air, but the Oklahoma State offense has not been as sharp through three games. There will also be an incredible home atmosphere in Morgantown. West Virginia should use the crowd to their advantage and get a big conference win against Oklahoma State.
