Two schools coming off of brutal Week 3 losses will look to turn the page on Saturday. #23 Texas A&M (2-1) got pummeled at home by Kentucky, while #10 LSU (2-1) dropped a nail-biter vs. Ole Miss. Now, these SEC rivals are poised for a pivotal conference clash. Which side has the edge during tonight’s matchup in Baton Rouge?
The Tigers are listed as 8.5-point favorites over the Aggies, with the total set at O/U 51.5 points. Below is my full preview, prediction and best bet for Saturday’s Texas A&M vs. LSU Week 4 matchup.
Texas A&M vs. LSU prediction, preview
What a disaster last Saturday was for the Aggies. It’s not as if this group just lost a game; it was a 31-21 defeat to Kentucky that wasn’t as close as the final score might suggest. It’s only natural for fans to question the postseason viability of this team going forward. Among the many warning signs from Week 3, an inability to move the ball stands out. Texas A&M scored one touchdown over the game’s first three quarters, only looking more respectable in garbage time. To make matters worse, quarterback Marcel Reed surrendered two interceptions.
It’s not as if this is the first time we’ve seen this offense fall flat on its face. During last season’s postseason loss at home, Miami held TAMU to just three points. Granted, there’s too much talent on this roster to expect another disastrous performance. Reed, in spite of last week, remains one of the SEC’s better passers. Wide receiver Mario Craver is a future NFL prospect, while fellow wideout Isaiah Horton has already racked up 170 yards through the air. Running back Rueben Owens is gaining 62.0 rushing yards per game as well. Keep in mind, A&M has won this matchup in each of the past two seasons. During 2025’s meeting, Reed churned out 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns en route to a 49-25 win.
Still, that was last season; the Tigers have undergone plenty of change since then. New head coach Lane Kiffin has brought aboard an onslaught of talented transfers. Chief among those names is former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt. Through three games, the dual-threat has thrown for 732 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for six more scores on the ground. However, the junior has also handed out a whopping five interceptions. Fortunately for LSU, this isn’t a one-man show on offense. Running back Dillin Jones leads the SEC with 64 rush attempts, producing 285 rushing yards and three touchdowns. As a unit, Louisiana State is averaging an impressive 40.0 points and 500.7 yards per game.
The biggest challenge will come on the other side of the ball. Granted, LSU’s defense isn’t without its strengths. Look no further than edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen, who has already racked up an FBS-leading six sacks. The Tigers have also shored up the run defense, allowing a meager 1.21 yards per rush attempt. With that being said, the secondary looked miserable last weekend in Oxford. Ole Miss’ Trinidad Chambliss threw for 363 passing yards and scored three total touchdowns, averaging 11.0 yards per completion. That’s not exactly reassuring heading into a contest with Reed and company.
Best Bet: Texas A&M +8.5 (-110)
A&M deserves plenty of flack for its dismal showing in Week 3. Regardless, there’s no denying that Mike Elko’s offense is capable of much more. A showdown with their ancient rivals should bring the best out of the Aggies. On the other side of the ball, Texas A&M’s stout, opportunistic defense could frustrate Leavitt at various points on Saturday. Even if LSU emerges victorious tonight, a two-score win feels a bit generous.
