Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox prediction, pick for Tuesday 9/8/26

Two teams going in opposite directions will meet tonight in Beantown. The Angels (54-90) don’t have much to play for, stuck at the bottom of the AL West. Still, a young Los Angeles squad would love nothing more than to play spoiler on Tuesday. That means taking down the Red Sox (80-65), owners of the American League’s third-best record. For Boston, today’s matchup presents an opportunity to close ground on the Yankees for the Junior Circuit’s top wild card spot. What’s in store tonight at Fenway Park?

The Red Sox are favorites (-149) over the Angels; the over/under is set at 7.5 runs. Below, Iโ€™ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Tuesday’s showdown between Los Angeles and Boston on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Angels vs. Red Sox pick, best bet today

  • Angels vs. Red Sox under 3.5 runs – 1st 5 Innings (+114): Detmers is talented enough to shut down Boston’s depleted lineup. After all, the Red Sox have done some of their best work this season against opposing bullpens. It’s fair to express some trepidation when it comes to Sandoval. However, don’t let his erratic command fool you. The lefty is more than capable of keeping Los Angeles’ terrible lineup at bay.

Angels vs. Red Sox prediction, preview

For all of Los Angeles’ struggles this season, Reid Detmers has been a bright spot. Over 162.0 innings pitched, the southpaw has notched a 3.44 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 182 strikeouts (10.1 K/9).ย Unfortunately, a severe lack of run support has left the 27-year-old’s win-loss record at 4-8. Regardless, the numbers suggest that Detmers is already one of the American League’s elite arms. He ranks within the 77th percentile or better among qualified starters in xERA (3.25), xBA (.217), whiff rate (29.0%), strikeout rate (28.0%) and walk rate (6.8%). Over his last 27.0 innings of work, LA’s ace has allowed a combined two earned runs (0.67 ERA).

It’s safe to say that scoring could be difficult to come by for the Red Sox. Granted, this group has turned things around this summer at the plate. Still, it’s difficult to ignore some of the team’s recent offensive struggles. Boston has scored 58 runs over its last 15 contests, seventh-worst in baseball during that stretch. To make matters worse, big bats such as Willson Contreras (hamstring) and Cedanne Rafaela (quad) are injured. Even at full strength, this matchup wouldn’t be much easier. The Red Sox have a .671 OPS at home against left-handed pitching, seventh-worst in baseball. Detmers’ biggest weakness is allowing well-struck balls. However, Boston’s 36.3% hard-hit rate is fifth-lowest in the majors.

The Sox will hand the ball to Patrick Sandoval, making his 11th start of the season. It’s been a mixed bag for the veteran, still shaking off the rust from an extended, injury-induced hiatus. Over 49.0 innings pitched, heโ€™s recorded a 4.41 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 50 strikeouts (9.2 K/9). Still, those numbers don’t tell the whole story. Sandoval has given up three earned runs or fewer in seven of his ten appearances so far. Most of his issues in 2026 have been a result of shaky command (4.6 BB/9). Fortunately, the Angels are averaging the league’s fourth-fewest walks per game (3.06).

Speaking of the Halos, there’s not much to write home about with this lineup. They’re scoring just 4.02 runs per game, second-fewest in the big leagues. Just three members of the active roster (min. 200 plate appearances) have a wRC+ above 100: Mike Trout (126 wRC+), Wade Meckler (121 wRC+) and Zach Neto (109 wRC+). To boot, Los Angeles’ .676 OPS against left-handed pitching is fifth-worst in the sport. The Angels have been especially bad over the past week, scoring three runs or fewer in five of their last six contests. Their old friend Sandoval should be licking his chops heading into today’s game.

Best Bet: Angels vs. Red Sox under 3.5 runs – 1st 5 Innings (+114)

Backing the Red Sox as heavy favorites isn’t easy tonight due to Detmers. However, the lefty is about the only thing going right for Los Angeles this season. As a compromise, the first five innings under makes plenty of sense. Both sides have done poorly at the plate against southpaws. For Sandoval, he’s been an above-average arm in all but three of his outings this season. Given his feeble opposition, I’m willing to bet the veteran can hold his own on Tuesday.
