The 2026 college football season is off to the races with a full slate of games in Week 1. Helping kick off the game on Thursday, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats will take on the UCF Knights in the season opener for both respective teams.
Looking at the odds, UCF enters as monstrous 42.5-point favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, with the game total set at 58.5 points.
This article will preview both teams and provide a pick for the Week 1 matchup.
Bethune-Cookman vs. UCF Preview
Bethune-Cookman Preview
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats are coming off their most successful season under head coach Raymond Woodie Jr. They finished the season with a 6-6 record in 2015, a four-win leap from their previous season, and went 5-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. This will be Woodie Jr.’s fourth season running the program, and there is an encouraging foundation that has been laid. Six players on the roster earned preseason All-SWAC recognition and several others are receiving national preseason honors.
It was an impressive offensive performance last season by the Wildcats, as they averaged 410.8 yards per game and rushed for 171.3 yards per game on the ground. Offensive lineman Christian Loving returns as one of the most accomplished players in the program and is a tone setter at the line of scrimmage. Running back Khamani Robinson will play a major role and opened some eyes last year with 5.8 yards per carry and five touchdowns. Florida A&M transfer Tyler Jefferson has been named the starting quarterback. Woodie Jr. has not been afraid to lean on quarterback by committee in the past, but Jefferson will get the first chance at the role. He has seen very limited time on the field thus far in his collegiate career, and this will be his first opportunity to serve as a consistent starter.
There is even more optimism on the defensive side of the ball, with four defenders earning preseason All-SWAC recognition. Stephen Sparrow will set the tone at the linebacker position, with Isaiah Washburn lining up alongside of him. Defensive back Naim Lassiter is also a foundational piece in the secondary and has been named one of 16 players at the position to be on the preseason watch list for the Aeneas Williams Award as well as a member of the preseason All-SWAC second team.
These past three seasons have largely been about laying the foundation for the Bethune-Cookman program. But the program is clearly not satisfied with their current outlook and will test themselves against strong competition right out of the gates this season.
UCF Preview
There is some notable stability in UCF’s program as well, as they enter the second season under the leadership of head coach Scott Frost. The former Nebraska head coach spent 2016 and 2017 in charge of this UCF program and is back where he started his head coaching career. The Knights went 5-7 last season, which included losing seven of their final nine games. UCF has high expectations for taking a leap forward this season.
James Madison transfer Alonza Barnett III will get the start under center, with 5,433 yards and 49 touchdowns accomplished thus far in his career. Tayven Jackson served as the primary starter last year for the Knights but transferred and earned the starting job at North Texas this season. Barnett III possesses an intriguing duel-threat skillset that should provide a new element to the UCF attack. There has also been plenty of conversation centered around the rest of the quarterback depth chart. Keyonte Jackson is listed as QB2 officially, while Kaleb Annet and Rocco Marriott hold the “OR” designation behind him. Frost has described the quarterback situation as “fluid.”
Duke Watson will be the clear top running back after spending the past two seasons playing a limited role at Louisville, while fellow transfer Landen Chambers will also be involved in the attack. Redshirt freshman Taevion Swint will also play a role in the rushing attack. Top receiver Duane Thomas Jr. returns after 53 receptions last year, and tight end Dylan Wade will look to add to his five touchdowns last season. Seven starters return on the defensive side of the ball, and the pressure is more significant across the board for UCF this season. This is largely looked at as a bowl-or-bust season for the Knights, or Frost could be back in the job market this coming offseason.
Bethune-Cookman vs. UCF Pick
With no sample size of game film for either of these teams on the year, there are some inherent question marks on both of these teams coming into the matchup. UCF has a notable talent advantage and more pressure on them coming into this year.
My lean is toward UCF controlling the game and getting the victory, but the 42.5 spread feels too significant for my liking. Of the Knights’ five wins last year, only the victory over North Carolina A&T came by over this significant margin in a 68-7 win. This is an opportunity for UCF to make a statement, but Bethune-Cookman has some legitimate talent and a foundation to provide some resistance. Familiarity is sometimes worth more than talent in the season opener, and there is a relatively high floor of what to expect for the roster from what has been built up over the past two years. Expect the Wildcats to keep it closer than is fully comfortable from UCF’s perspective, and for this spread to be too significant.
However, my best bet for this matchup is for the game total to remain under 58.5 total points. Bethune-Cookman leans more on a rushing attack and will be making a conscious effort to control the pace of play for as long as possible. They do not have the offensive firepower to win this in a shootout, and allowing the clock to bleed out as quickly as possible will play to their favor. There have been plenty of moving parts on each of these rosters, as has become the norm in college football, but expect this to lead to some growing pains from a scoring perspective on both sides.
UCF has won eight consecutive matchups between these two programs, but is 12-5 all-time when these two teams face off. Bethune-Cookman has not won an FBS matchup since 2014. But with both programs leaning on a new quarterback with dual-threat tendencies, expect the big plays to be a bit limited and points to be difficult to come by from both sides. There is a foundation being laid for this Bethune-Cookman defense that should be able to limit the damage in this game. UCF will need to drive the scoring for this game total to have a chance of going over, and Bethune-Cookman should be able to bend without breaking at a reliable enough rate. Expect a little bit of a scare to be provided by the undermanned Wildcats’ roster and for the 58.5 scoring line to be too lofty for the combined total.
