First things first, let’s look at the starting pitchers in this matchup.

Parker Messick steps to the bump for the Guardians on Sunday. Another credit to their incredible pitching development system, the 25-year-old has been their de facto ace this season with a 2.68 ERA through 20 starts. Messick doesn’t have overwhelming stuff, but his ability to pound fastballs in the zone has kept hitters off balance all season long. He doesn’t give up much hard contact or issue many walks, and his cutter has been a lethal strikeout pitch this year. If he can tighten up his off-speed and breaking pitches, he might make a case for a Cy Young before long.

Opposite him is ol’ reliable Drew Rasmussen. One of the most dependable starters in the league, Rasmussen continues to chug along this year with a 3.28 ERA through 19 starts. While he doesn’t often go deep into games, most teams would give their right arm for 5-6 elite innings every five days. Rasmussen’s cutter/four-seamer/sinker combo keeps hitters on their back foot, and he hardly ever gets himself in trouble with walks.

Cleveland’s offense has struggled for most of the season. While it is their M.O. to focus on pitching and defense, this level of struggle is unusual. Jose Ramirez’s absence definitely holds a lot of weight here. Still, the fact of the matter is that they’re reliant on rookies like Travis Bazzana and Chase DeLauter to be important contributors, and that’s a tough equation in the short term.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s offense continues to roll on the strength of its big three: Junior Caminero, Yandy Diaz, and Jonathan Aranda. Those three all have a wRC+ of 130 or greater. While the remainder of their lineup is focused on defense, they’re getting good production out of Ryan Vilade and Victor Mesa Jr. to balance the lineup. That top trio alone can take them awfully far in the postseason, and it’s a lot for Cleveland to reckon with.
