Factor 1: Advancement Odds
Before you fill out a single game, check what the market actually thinks. Pull up DraftKings Sportsbook and look at the futures odds. Which teams are favored to reach the Sweet 16, Elite Eight, and Final Four from each region? What do the first-round spreads say about each matchup?
Seeds tell you what the committee thinks. Odds tell you what sharp money thinks right now. Those two things are often different, and building your picks around actual advancement odds instead of seed lines puts you ahead of most of your pool before you’ve made a single decision.
Factor 2: Public Pick Popularity
This is the factor most bracket pickers completely ignore, and it’s where the biggest edges live.
When a team’s pick popularity is significantly out of line with their actual advancement odds, that’s a value play. Last year, Purdue had a 51% chance to reach the Sweet 16 as a No. 4 seed. Only 39% of national brackets had them advancing that far. Picking the chalk actually gave you a leg up on more than half the field.
Those kinds of gaps exist all over the bracket every single year.

Factor 3: Pool Size
It should go without saying, but in a 20-person pool, you don’t need to swing for the fences. Make solid picks, find your smart value spots (with factors 1 & 2), and let other people beat themselves.
In a 2,000-person pool, someone is almost certainly going to nail some unexpected picks and rack up quite a score. If you played it safe, you probably won’t be able to catch them.
The larger your pool, the more your bracket needs to diverge from the field. The same bracket that wins the 20-person pool could finish 300th in a 2,000-person pool and win nothing. This sounds like common sense, but you would be shocked at how many people don’t account for pool size.
Factor 4: Scoring Rules
In a standard 1-2-4-8-16-32 scoring system, your champion pick is worth as many points as getting all 32 first-round games right.
In pools with flatter scoring or upset bonuses, the math shifts, and early upset picks can have real expected value. An optimized bracket in an upset bonus pool could look borderline reckless compared to one with standard scoring.
Your scoring format determines if certain risks are worth it based on the expected points if the pick hits. There’s a large subsection of your pool that is oblivious to this or doesn’t know how this fully ties into their NCAA bracket picks. That’s your advantage.
