Following eight episodes of chaos in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, Fallout season 2 has come to a close. The story isn’t done just yet, however, with the finale once again ending on a bit of a cliffhanger. There is a critical post-credit scene, too, which raises even more questions.
Here is a quick breakdown of how Fallout‘s latest episode leads into the upcoming third season, as well as everything else we know about what lies ahead for one of Amazon Prime Video’s most popular TV shows.

How did Fallout season 2 end?
Maximus successfully defended Freetown from the Deathclaws that spilled over from the Strip, with an assist from the New California Republic after his armor failed. The Legion, however, marched on Las Vegas right after it was liberated from the monsters. Macaulay Culkin’s character, Lacerta Legate, took over as their new Caesar. We didn’t see the two armies go head-to-head, but a war between the NCR and the Legion is certainly brewing.
The Ghoul, meanwhile, followed directions from a digitized House to his family’s cryo-chambers. They were gone, though, presumably sprung by the Enclave. Barb left a postcard for Colorado, which is where the Ghoul and Dogmeat are off to at the end of the season. We also discovered that Cooper took the fall for anti-American activities in the flashback storyline, getting arrested for his secret dealings in Las Vegas.
Before looking for his family, the Ghoul made a detour to save Lucy. Hank was about to implant a mind control chip into her neck, but she turned the tables after the Ghoul shot him and put the chip inside of him instead. After revealing that he implanted miniaturized devices into people throughout the Wasteland, Hank activated his chip and wiped his own memory.
We also saw a trapped Stephanie ask the Enclave to initiate Phase 2 in Vaults 32 and 33. Considering there wasn’t any other payoff to the Forced Evolutionary Virus plot, that could be part of her plan to take down the vaults from the inside. Oh, and Stephanie is Hank’s wife from before the war, too. Still unaware of the mutiny under the surface, Norm survived a radroach attack at Vault-Tec HQ and escaped with an injured Claudia.
In the post-credit scene, Dane delivered Elder Quintus plans for Liberty Prime Alpha – a giant robot straight out of the Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 video games. Suffice to say, Quintus’ branch of the Brotherhood of Steel is going to be an aggressor in the wars to come.
Will there be a Fallout season 3?
Yes, Amazon officially renewed the show for a third season in May 2025. Co-stars Walton Goggins and Aaron Moten, as well as executive producer Jonathan Nolan, confirmed as much as the Fallout Fan Celebration in Nevada last November.
Each of the first two seasons were eight episodes, just like Prime Video’s other blockbuster shows such as The Boys, Gen V and Invincible. Barring any changes to the streaming platform’s strategy, Fallout season 3 should follow the same format.
When does Fallout season 3 come out?
Fallout season 3 is reportedly set to start filming on May 1, 2026, in and around Los Angeles. While there is not a confirmed release date for the next batch of episodes, we can use past timelines to try and find a reasonable estimate for their arrival.
Season 2 started production in November 2024 and wrapped on May 7, 2025. That six-month shoot included a multi-week delay, though, due to the California wildfires in January 2025. Season 3 should be done shooting before October, followed by seven months of post-production. Based on that schedule, we could expect season 3 to premiere on Amazon Prime Video sometime around May 2027.
What other Fallout spinoffs are coming up?
Back in January, Amazon announced that it had green-lit Fallout Shelter, a reality competition show based on the world of the Fallout show and video games. The first season, which will be 10 episodes long, will be co-produced by Studio Lambert, Bethesda Game Studios and Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films. Studio Lambert previously produced The Traitors, Undercover Boss and Squid Game: The Challenge. Fallout Shelter will take place in a Vault-Tec vault, featuring survival-related games with a cash prize on the line. It will mark Prime Video’s latest branded reality show, following in the footsteps of MrBeast’s Beast Games.
There are not any other Fallout spinoffs publicly in the works at Prime Video.
