Johnson will start at quarterback for the Commanders on Thursday with Jayden Daniels (elbow) and Marcus Mariota (hand) both out. This is Johnson’s first start since 2021, but in that game, the 39-year-old did throw for 304 yards vs. the Bengals. Still, this was four years ago and Johnson has only thrown 14 passes in NFL games since that start.
There is plenty of uncertainty surrounding Johnson, but one thing that is for certain is that he is in a truly elite matchup vs. the Cowboys. Dallas is allowing the most passing yards per game (272.9), the second-most yards per pass (7.7) and third-highest completion percentage this season (68.8%). In their 15 games, the Cowboys have allowed 13 quarterbacks to surpass 178.5 passing yards.
In fact, some very lackluster passers have had season-best showings vs. Dallas, most notably 450 yards from Russell Wilson in Week 2 and 283 yards from Justin Fields in Week 5. While we have nearly no data on Johnson’s current form, he does have two strong pass catchers in Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel at his disposal. Johnson should be competent enough to clear this very low 178.5 passing yard line on his home turf Thursday.
