To say that Fulham had a rough October would be an understatement. After losing to Aston Villa to end their September, they dropped three straight games against Bournemouth, Arsenal, and Newcastle. A nervy Carabao Cup win in penalties over League One side Wycombe did little to assuage their fears. But, since then, they’re back on track.
Over the past month and a half, Fulham have three wins in six tries, defeating Wolverhampton, Sunderland, and Tottenham. None of their losses carried any shame; they dropped points against Manchester City and Crystal Palace, two teams in the top five of the table, and lost to a surging Everton squad. They were all competitive losses to boot. At the very least, Fulham look capable of climbing into the mid-table if they can maintain this level of play. If AC Milan loanee Samuel Chukwueze can keep up his form, they’re in great shape.
Things aren’t as hopeful for Burnley. After a narrow win over the league-worst Wolves, the Clarets have lost six straight Premier League matches to plummet into the relegation zone. They’re 19th in goals scored and 19th in goals allowed, both marks only exceeded by the 0-2-13 Wolves. It’s a dire situation, and unless something changes fast, they’ll be yo-yoed back to the Championship for the third time in the last five years.
If they have a hope in this game, it comes from goalie Martin Dubravka. The 36-year-old Slovakian goalkeeper has put out fires left and right, saving a terrible Burnley defense from looking historically bad. If they want to take down Fulham, they’ll need him on his A-game.
Unfortunately for the Clarets, I don’t see much hope here. They’ve lost all their offensive punch in the past few weeks. Fulham’s playmaking group of Chukwueze, Raul Jimenez, Harry Wilson, Emile Smith-Rowe, and Alex Iwobi is overwhelming for a defense lacking in quality.
