Washington and Boise State face off in the first major bowl game of the season. The Huskies had a good year in the Big Ten and come into this game with one of the best offensive trios in the sport: quarterback Demond Williams, running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston. Despite Coleman and Boston being set to head off to the NFL in a few months, both decided to play in this game. The fact that Washington is keeping a full roster proves that they are taking the game seriously and want to come in and beat Boise State.
The Huskies should get plenty of scoring chances in this one. Boise State can’t stop the run, something Washington does extremely well. The Broncos rank 61st nationally in defensive rushing success rate and 60th in defensive EPA/rush. Boise State was able to dominate inferior Mountain West competition, but against the best teams on its schedule, it had issues. The Broncos lost to South Florida by 27 and to Notre Dame by 21. They also gave up 37 points to Air Force, 31 points to UNLV and 30 points to Fresno State. The Washington offense ranks sixth in the nation in success rate and 15th in EPA/play.
The Huskies should be able to move it against Boise State and turn those drives into touchdowns. Washington’s offense ranks 12th in points per quality drive, while Boise State’s defense ranks 117th in the same metric. That means Washington is scoring touchdowns when it gets inside the opponent’s 40-yard line, and Boise State is giving up touchdowns in that situation. That should allow Jonah Coleman to dominate and score at least two touchdowns. Coleman ranked 13th in the nation with 14 rushing touchdowns on the season. Coleman also combined for a remarkable ten total touchdowns in Washington’s three games against non-conference opponents. In his final game at Washington, he should dominate another non-conference opponent and go for multiple scores. At +215, there is tremendous value on this Coleman prop.
