In a transitional season for Manchester City, its first without former club captain Kevin de Bruyne since 2014-15, the Sky Blues have struggled early on. Entering the Matchweek 6 clash against newly-promoted Burnley, City sits just ninth in the table on seven points, eight behind leaders Liverpool. The Clarets are 16th on four points.
Saturday’s match will begin at 10 a.m. ET (3 p.m. local) at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. City is a -550 favorite to win and +700 to draw at DraftKings Sportsbook, while Burnley is +950.

One season after finishing just third in the Premier League Golden Boot race, Erling Haaland is setting out to prove that he’s still the class of England’s top flight. In the first five matches of the season, he’s found the back of the net six times, three more than any other player. All in all, City has still had a great attack, tying for the fifth-most goals in the division, but it has been slightly more exploitable at the back. Thankfully for Sky Blues fans, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s transfer from Paris Saint-Germain has helped; since the Yashin Trophy winner arrived, he has only conceded one goal, Gabriel Martinelli’s 93rd-minute chipped equalizer for Arsenal. Most encouragingly for City, new arrival Tijjani Reijnders has played all 450 minutes, notching three goal contributions, including a beautiful assist for Haaland to open the scoring against the Gunners.
The Clarets have done enough to stay out of the relegation zone so far, which is a decent showing given that they finished 19th and suffered the drop the last time they were promoted to the Premier League in 2023-24. On paper, Burnley looks like the least talented of the newly-promoted sides after losing goalkeeper James Trafford, who helped propel them to the top flight last season. But unlike mainstays Aston Villa and Wolves, the Clarets have picked up a win in the early going, edging out fellow promoted club Sunderland 2-0, and they also drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest. No Burnley player scored more than six goals in 2023-24, and Jaidon Anthony already has three in five games. Former City man Kyle Walker has played all 450 minutes, and Quilindschy Hartman is tied for third in tackles. Shot-stopper Martin Dúbravka has saved 18 of the 25 shots on target he’s faced, the fifth-biggest over-performance considering opponents’ shot quality.
It could be a fairly low-scoring match. The Clarets set up in a 5-4-1 against Tottenham, Liverpool, and Forest, allowing their opponent to dominate possession but limiting them to a total of just five goals across the three matches. Burnley certainly has the personnel to park the bus: Hartman ranks in the top quartile in tackles, interceptions, blocks, and clearances per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, and Maxime Estève and Hjalmar Ekdal are tied for sixth in the division with 37 clearances each. If anyone knows the Sky Blue attackers’ moves, it’s Walker. Still, the Clarets don’t have enough attacking talent to maneuver past a Manchester City back line that has two of the planet’s most valuable center-backs and its best goalkeeper. The edges of the back line aren’t perfect — Rayan Aït-Nouri remains out as he recovers from an ankle injury, and Abdukodir Khusanov is out with a foot issue — but Burnley doesn’t have the requisite talent to bang home multiple goals.
Given City’s strong performance at the Etihad both this season and last, I can’t pick against the team that has won six titles in the past eight seasons. Still, the Sky Blues have enough questions that I don’t think it’ll be a complete wipeout.
