She made the Australian Open Final to start the year, before losing to American Madison Keys. The following major, Sabalenka made the French Open Final before losing to American Coco Gauff. Then, at Wimbledon, Sabalenka lost in the semifinals to Amanda Anisimova.
For the fourth time this season, Sabalenka could be eliminated from a Grand Slam by an American, the third time in a Final. Sabalenka is the defending US Open champion and is on another level when she is on hardcourt. Sabalenka had not dropped a set in this tournament until her exciting battle with Jessica Pegula in the semifinals, which went to a third set. She has the advantage of much more big-match experience, as this will be Sabalenka’s seventh career Grand Slam Final.

As of 57 days ago, Amanda Anisimova had never played in a Grand Slam Final. On Saturday, she will be playing her second in two months. After taking a hiatus from the sport in 2023, Anisimova has worked hard over the last two years to get her game back to where it was. That hard work finally paid off with a trip to the Wimbledon Final, after defeating Sabalenka in the semifinals. However, Anisimova was deeply humbled in the Wimbledon Final, losing 6-0, 6-0 to Iga Swiatek. Anisimova has shown unbelievable resilience so far in this US Open. Not only bouncing back from that brutal loss, but defeating Swiatek handily in the quarterfinals en route to another Grand Slam Final.
Anisimova has shaken off a lot of her demons in a short amount of time, but the pressure of another big final is now on. At least she knows, it literally cannot go worse than last time. That is actually a decent mindset to have going into this tournament. The American crowd will be strongly backing Anisimova in this match, and she should thrive on that support. Anisimova has the game to defeat Sabalenka, as showcased in the past. She just needs to come with the right mentality, and she will have a great chance to win her first-ever Grand Slam title.
Anisimova vs. Sabalenka Pick, Best Bet
There is a lot on the line for both women in this match. Sabalenka has been so close to winning a Grand Slam title all season, but has repeatedly come up short against American opponents. For how dominant she has been over the last couple of seasons, it’s a bit disappointing to only have three Grand Slam titles to show for it. Her main rival over the past few seasons, Swiatek, has managed to rack up six Grand Slam titles. In this season where Sabalenka has clearly been the best player in the world, Swiatek has added another major to her career total, and Sabalenka has not. This is Sabalenka’s third straight US Open Final, and she is the defending champion. This would be a massive win for her to get a bit closer to Swiatek’s career Grand Slam count heading into next season.
Sabalenka is looking to add to her legacy, while Anisimova is looking to create hers. Anisimova has had a rollercoaster ride, from being a young prodigy, to struggling with her game, to taking a hiatus from the sport over mental health concerns, to now making back-to-back Grand Slam Finals and cementing herself as one of the best players in the sport. Interestingly enough, almost every big milestone in her career has come against Sabalenka. In 2018, at just 17 years old, Anisimova upset Sabalenka to make the fourth round at the Australian Open. The following major, Anisimova upset Sabalenka again en route to her first-ever Grand Slam semifinals at the French Open. Then, earlier this summer, Anisimova defeated Sabalenka in the Wimbledon semifinals to make her first-ever Grand Slam Final.
My best bet for the US Open women’s singles final is for Anisimova to defeat Sabalenka. Anisimova has won six of nine career matchups against Sabalenka. Swiatek’s calm, clinical game was unbreakable for Anisimova at Wimbledon. Anisimova has been able to get the better of Sabalenka so many times because their games are so similar. They are both power hitters who play with fire and passion. Anisimova sees herself in Sabalenka and knows how to push her buttons to distract her from just playing tennis. All of the pressure is on Sabalenka in this match, and Anisimova should play loose, unlike at Wimbledon. Anisimova defeated Sabalenka en route to her first Grand Slam fourth round in Australia, her first Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros and her first Grand Slam Final at Wimbledon. It is only fitting that she defeats Sabalenka one more time to win her first Grand Slam title at the US Open.
