In the wide-open American League, every game matters. That’s what makes this weekend’s series between the Guardians and Rangers so important. Cleveland, 64-62, enters this contest just three games behind the Mariners for a wildcard spot. Texas, 63-66, is down but not out in this postseason chase. Which of these two playoff hopefuls has the edge entering tonight’s matchup? Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Friday’s showdown between the Guardians and Rangers.
The Rangers are favorites (-156) over the Guardians, with the over/under set at 7.5 runs. Let’s break down which side has the edge on DraftKings Sportsbook entering tonight’s contest.
Guardians vs. Rangers prediction, preview
As has been the case all season, Texas needs a solid performance on the mound tonight. Fortunately for the Rangers, they have the right man for the job. Nathan Eovaldi has been unhittable this season, emerging as one of the AL’s best arms. Over 123.0 innings of work, the former All-Star has posted a 1.76 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 120 strikeouts. The right-hander has allowed more than two runs in just three of his 21 appearances so far.
Eovaldi is a handful, even for the most dangerous offenses in baseball. The Guardians do not fit the bill of a team built for success in this spot. Other than Jose Ramirez, just two other regulars in this lineup have a wRC+ above 100. This season, Cleveland is averaging just 3.95 runs per game, the league’s fifth-lowest mark. Since August 1st, the Guards have scored just 74 runs, tied for the sport’s sixth-lowest total during that time.
If Cleveland has any hope at a win, it’ll likely take a great performance on the mound. That means a bounceback from Friday’s starter, Slade Cecconi. It’s been an up-and-down 2025 campaign for the righty. After a stellar month of July, August hasn’t been very kind to the 26-year-old. Over his last three starts, Cecconi has surrendered 13 earned runs (8.56 ERA). His stats on the season are middling at best (4.50 ERA, 1.32 WHIP).
With that being said, all is not lost for the Guardians. The Rangers are also offensively challenged, despite a brief hot stretch in the middle of the season. This year, Texas is averaging baseball’s fourth-fewest runs per game at home (3.86). In addition, the club has scored just 75 runs this month, the league’s tenth-lowest mark. At this point, it’s difficult to trust these hitters against anyone, even a struggling arm such as Cecconi.
Guardians vs. Rangers pick, best bet
Best Bet: Guardians vs. Rangers under 7.5 total runs (-106)
Nobody who follows either of these teams should expect an offensive outburst on Friday. Eovaldi, against this feeble Guardians lineup, is a good bet to pitch another gem. The bigger question is Cecconi, who has looked off recently. Still, the same can be said for Texas’ inconsistent bats. Don’t be shocked if we see a pitcher’s duel tonight in Arlington.
