Devin Booker was the 13th overall pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 2015 NBA Draft, and he’s seen and been through it all.
The Suns won an average of 21 games per season during his first four years in the league. In 2020-21, Phoenix lost in the NBA Finals to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. The shooting guard has seen six head coaches come and go. He’s scored bucket after bucket, so many that he is the Suns’ franchise leader in points.
This past season, Phoenix underwhelmed with a 36-46 record and missed the playoffs for the first time in five seasons. The finish prompted Kevin Durant to be shipped off to Houston while the front office stacked up big man after big man through the draft and trade market.
On Wednesday, some semblance of consistency was restored as the Suns extended their franchise cornerstone for two years and $145 million, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Booker’s current contract was signed in 2024 for four years and $220 million, so this extension will keep Booker in Phoenix until the 2029-30 season.
Booker will be 33 years old at the end of the extension. His play style isn’t predicated on athleticism, so there’s a good chance his game ages like fine wine. Barring injury, Booker could be in line for another big payday in 2030. Whether that is with Phoenix will be an interesting story to follow, but there’s no denying that Suns fans can breathe a sigh of relief with the superstar once again under contract for the long haul.
Looking toward the immediate future, the Suns’ status for the 2025-26 season does bring up questions. Their win total sits at just 30.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook and the team remains a +700 long shot to even make the playoffs with -1200 odds they miss the postseason. The solidified situation for Booker provides some security, but Phoenix still has plenty of work to do if they want to get back to the postseason.
