Jannik Sinner was the top-ranked player in the world heading into Wimbledon. He is coming off the heartbreaking loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open Final, and is hoping to finally win his first Wimbledon title. Sinner has won three Grand Slam titles, and prior to Roland Garros, Alcaraz had won four. That French Open title would have put Sinner level with Alcaraz in career Grand Slams and made it a race to see who can win the next one. However, after Alcaraz stole that title from Sinner’s hands, he is now chasing his rival. Alcaraz has won two straight Wimbledon titles and with a third straight this year, he would create real space between himself and Sinner in the all-time Grand Slam titles list. This is a massive opportunity for Sinner to show why he is the top-ranked player in the world by winning this tournament.
Sinner’s opponent in the second round is the Australian Aleksander Vukic. Vukic is the 93rd-ranked player in the world and trending down. There was a time in late 2023 when Vukic was a top 50 player in the world, but he has been on a slow decline over the past two years. Vukic has only defeated one top-ten player in his career, and that came against Casper Ruud in the 2024 Shanghai Masters. He doesn’t stand much of a chance against Sinner, but will try to give him a challenge.
Vukic has never made it out of the second round at Wimbledon, so this is his typical cap. The question is not whether or not Sinner will defeat him, but how convincingly.
Sinner vs. Vukic pick, best bet
Jannik Sinner dominated his first-round opponent, Luca Nardi. The spread in his opening round match was -9.5 games, and Sinner covered that thanks to a 6-0 in the third set. That first-round victory was reminiscent of Sinner’s path through the French Open. At Roland Garros, Sinner did not drop a set until the final against Alcaraz, destroying most of those opponents. Sinner has faced Aleksander Vukic twice before in his career and dominated both meetings. Both came in matches that were best of three sets, and Sinner won those 6-2, 6-3, and 6-2, 6-4. Sinner has dominated Vukic in both of their previous matchups and dominated his first-round opponent at Wimbledon. All signs point towards more dominance from Sinner in this match.
My best bet for this match is for Aleksander Vukic to win under 10.5 games. At Wimbledon last year, Vukic was tasked with facing Carlos Alcaraz in the first round. Vukic’s game was actually in a better place at that time, and he only won 10 games against Alcaraz despite a feisty first set that went to a tiebreaker. Sinner should be just as ruthless as, if not more than, Alcaraz was last year. That will keep Vukic under 10.5 games won.
