There have been many storylines in NBA free agency so far. While not the biggest, Tre Mann’s free agency has been among the strangest. But now it concludes as Mann returns to the Charlotte Hornets.
Mann, 24, was traded to the Hornets at the trade deadline in 2024 as part of the Gordon Hayward deal to the Thunder. He immediately put his mark on the team as the starting point guard, showing a lot of playmaking and scoring juice. That continued into this season, until his breakout was cut short by a herniated disk. That caused him to miss the last 69 games of the season. Not ideal for a pending restricted free agent still proving himself to a new team.
Things got stranger when the Hornets declined to issue him a qualifying offer. That allowed him to negotiate with any team. While not proven, his theoretical skills matched with a lot of teams, and his value could have been a bargain. Which makes it stranger still that he ends up with the team that seemingly wasn’t keen on retaining him.
If Mann is recovered from his back injury, this could be a steal for Charlotte. He’s a great scoring combo guard with passing chops and on-ball defensive skills. For a team that needs young star talent, betting on Mann’s age 25-27 seasons is wise. The deal also hedges Mann’s bets. If the injuries return to bite, he’s locked into good money for a few years. If he stays healthy and continues to break out, he could hit free agency at 27 and command a big payday.
Ultimately, the deal comes with risks for both sides. They may not be the happiest with how they got here, but Mann and the Hornets can benefit from this contract.
