We’re only one day away from the 2025 NBA Draft, and the rumor mill is already buzzing. Cooper Flagg is a lock to go first overall, but there’s plenty of intrigue over where several other freshman phenoms will land. That includes Liam McNeeley, a high upside pick in this top-heavy draft class. Analysts and fans appear split on how far the power forward will fall on Wednesday. After a stellar campaign with UConn, where will McNeely end up?
DraftKings Sportsbook is offering several enticing NBA Draft props ahead of Wednesday night. Let’s take a closer look at which player prop bettors should target for Liam McNeeley.
Liam McNeeley draft position U21.5 (-135)
The 2024-25 season was a bit of a letdown for UConn, who were hoping for a third-straight national title. Unfortunately for head coach Dan Hurley’s crew, the Huskies were bounced by eventual champion Florida in the Round of 32. Still, this roster wasn’t lacking in talent. That includes McNeeley, who put together an impressive freshman year. Over 27 games, the former five-star prospect averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists. However, the big man only shot 38.1% from the field and 31.7% from three-point range.
A lack of efficiency might be what keeps McNeeley from reaching the lottery. Regardless, there’s still plenty to like here for most front offices. Despite his lackluster numbers from deep, the 19-year-old projects as an above-average shooter at the next level. A smooth stroke and a quick trigger suggest that last season’s mark isn’t a sign of things to come. Unlike other youngsters, McNeeley is also competent at the free-throw line (86.6%). Ultimately, the biggest draw here is NBA-ready shooting in addition to massive potential.
With that being said, basketball history is loaded with floor-spacers that struggled at the next level. McNeeley isn’t much of a creator, as he doesn’t possess standout passing or ball-handling skills. To be fair, the 6’7 forward was often asked to handle a heavy load for UConn. That won’t be the case in the NBA; even in a best-case scenario, it’s difficult to envision McNeeley emerging a primary option on offense. Defensively, he’s an active presence, displaying plenty of effort. However, we’re not talking about a generational athlete here. Being a step slower than elite NBA scorers will prevent McNeeley from being a disruptive two-way force.
There are several squads with a clear need for someone with McNeeley’s skillset. As previously mentioned, the lottery is a bit of a pipe dream (albeit not impossible). After that point, anything is up for grabs. Among the teams that could use a capable stretch five, these few deserve mention:
- Memphis Grizzlies (pick #16)
- Washington Wizards (pick #18)
- Brooklyn Nets (pick #19)
- Atlanta Hawks (pick #22)
Obviously, only one of those clubs sits above McNeeley’s over/under of pick #22. Realistically, any team that isn’t in contention should be considering the UConn alum around this point of the draft. It’s rare to find a teenager with NBA-ready shooting. Some eager coaching staff will be willing to take a chance on Wednesday.
