The Cincinnati Reds take on the Detroit Tigers in a pivotal game tonight at Comerica Park. With both teams entering this contest on different trajectories, this matchup feels like a test for Cincinnati. The Reds have stumbled on the road, sitting at a sub-.500 mark, while Detroit has dominated at home, showing no signs of slowing down. With the Tigers sitting comfortably atop the AL Central and holding one of the best records in the majors, they’ll look to continue their dominance on their turf. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday night baseball game between the Tigers and the Reds.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Tigers vs. Reds prediction, preview
Nick Martinez, the Reds’ starter, has been steady but far from spectacular. With a 3.70 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, he’s been effective when controlling the game, though he’s struggled in away starts, posting a 4.76 ERA. Martinez’s 36.7% groundball rate and 0.84 HR/9 indicate a pitcher who’s prone to surrendering fly balls and home runs, which could be a dangerous combination at Comerica Park. His struggles with consistency on the road will likely be tested by a Tigers lineup that’s found its rhythm at home.
Tonight, the Detroit Tigers will roll with left-hander Brant Hurter (2-1, 1.75 ERA) as the opener, with right-hander Keider Montero (2-1, 4.30 ERA) expected to handle the bulk of the workload. Hurter, known for his ability to go multiple innings, will face Reds righty Nick Martinez (4-6, 3.70 ERA), who has quietly been one of the more reliable arms since returning from Japan in 2022.
Hurter has been highly effective in a specialized opener role, maintaining a 1.75 ERA across 36 innings this season. His command has been solid, with nine walks and 34 strikeouts, showing he can handle the task when called upon to set the tone. Montero, though, will take over for the majority of the game, and his strong performance at home this season (3.12 ERA) leans advantage Detroit.
Keider Montero, expected to get plenty of work behind Hurter, brings a solid 3.12 ERA at home and has been much sharper at Comerica Park than on the road. Montero’s ability to suppress hard contact (85th percentile in barrel rate) and limit free passes (8.6% walk rate) is key to his success, especially in a stadium like Comerica, which suppresses home runs. While his 4.30 ERA isn’t spectacular, his 44.5% groundball rate and strong home performance should give the Tigers a slight edge.
The Tigers’ offense, despite some recent struggles, still boasts a top-tier lineup. Spencer Torkelson’s .498 slugging against righties and Riley Greene’s .485 SLG make Detroit an offensive force, especially at home. With 16 home runs, Torkelson continues to thrive in Comerica Park, and Martinez’s flyball tendencies will certainly test his limits. Even though Detroit’s bats have been quieter lately, their ability to get timely hits and score in clutch situations gives them an edge in close contests.
Reds vs. Tigers pick, best bet
In terms of betting trends, the Tigers have been dominant at home, with a 23-9 record. They’ve also covered the run line in eight of their last nine games against National League opponents after a road win. This tells us they’re not just winning—they’re winning decisively. Meanwhile, the Reds have shown inconsistency on the road, and despite their recent offensive surge, they’ve struggled in tight games, with a 4-9 record in their last 13 road games against AL Central teams.
With Montero’s home success and the Tigers’ bullpen advantage, I expect Detroit to build an early lead and hold off Cincinnati late. The Tigers are 8-2 in one-run games at home, and their bullpen ranks among the top 10 in MLB with a 3.41 ERA, making it hard to see the Reds overcoming a deficit.
The combination of home dominance, bullpen depth, and superior offense makes Detroit the safer, more reliable play. With Martinez’s struggles on the road and Montero’s strength at home, I expect the Tigers to win comfortably tonight. Tigers to cover the run line is my play.
Best bet: Tigers -1.5 (+160) vs. Reds
