Tony Gonsolin becomes the latest Dodgers pitcher to join the injured list. The 31-year-old has been placed on the 15-day IL due to right elbow discomfort. This is a bit of a surprise and a concern, as Gonsolin had just returned to the rotation a few weeks ago.
In addition, Chris Stratton has been designated for assignment while Kirby Yates and Michael Kopech were each activated from the injured list.
Gonsolin has made seven starts this season and is posting a 3-2 record with a 5.00 ERA. He has pitched 36.0 total innings with 38 strikeouts tallied and nine home runs allowed.
The right-hander missed the entire 2024 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, so the organization is wisely being cautious. Gonsolin has spent all six seasons of his career with the Dodgers. He had his full breakout during the 2022 season in which he became an All-Star with a 16-1 record and posted a 2.14 ERA across his 24 starts. He struggled last season with his ERA growing to 4.98 before being shut down for Tommy John surgery in August.
Hopefully, this short IL stint is all he needs to fully recover, and the issue does not lead to any additional long-term issues for the former World Series champion.
Los Angeles has a deep pitching staff but has fought through plenty of injury issues. Roki Sasaki, Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Emmet Sheehan, Kyle Hurt, Edgardo Henriquez, Michael Grove, River Ryan, Blake Treinen, and Gavin Stone each have already hit the injured list with varying degrees of severity. Their stable of pitchers is a luxury the Dodgers can afford as the injuries would have sunk plenty of smaller-market teams’ seasons already, but the team will not reach its aspirations without health and production returning.
Even amidst the injuries, the Dodgers are the World Series favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook at +270 odds. They also hold +160 odds of winning the National League and have climbed to -475 favorites to win the NL West.
