The Aces aren’t the same team they were a couple years ago, but they’re still a talented bunch. Las Vegas is off to a 3-2 start to the 2025 season and will play the Storm on Sunday, June 1.
The matchup will one of the first WNBA Commissioner Cup games. The in-season tournament lasts from June 1-17 with the champion splitting a $500,000 prize.
The Aces are 1.5-point favorites on the road, and the game total is set at 163.5 points on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Here’s my prediction and pick for Sunday’s Aces vs. Storm matchup.
Aces vs. Storm prediction
The Aces are just a half game ahead of the Storm in the standings to start the 2025 season. They’re similar teams with Las Vegas playing better offense, while the Storm have a slightly better defense.
They faced off in last year’s first round with Las Vegas winning 2-0. The two franchises then completed a trade that sent Jewell Loyd to the Aces, Kelsey Plum to the Sparks and the No. 2 pick to the Storm. This will be Loyd’s second time playing her former team.
In the first matchup on May 25, Loyd scored 14 points on 4-of-15 shooting. Seattle won 102-82 behind 23 points from Nneka Ogwumike and 21 points from Erica Wheeler.
Another blowout seems unlikely, as it’s uncommon for a good team to get blown out by the same team in such a short span. Las Vegas is still incredibly talented and has the best player in the league in A’ja Wilson.
Wilson is averaging 23.6 points, 11.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 2.2 steals and 2.4 blocks per game through the opening five contests. The Aces will go as far as Wilson can take them.
Aces vs. Storm pick, best bet
Although the Aces have the championship pedigree and the best player in the league, it’s still going to be a difficult game against the Storm.
As mentioned before, Seattle won the previous meeting by 20 points and should be hungry for another win after losing Friday’s game to the Dream. Seattle is led by Skylar Diggins and Ogwumike who average 19 and 18.2 points per game, respectively.
Seattle made a trade for the No. 2 pick, likely expecting to enter a rebuild soon, but the team is playing well to start the season. Diggins and Ogwumike are largely responsible for that and should have solid outings against the Aces.
The Storm host this matchup and should win at home for the third time this season. Seattle is a 1.5-point underdog on DraftKings Sportsbook. I believe that the Storm win outright, making the moneyline odds of +105 great value. That said, the spread gives some wiggle room for those not as confident.
