The Padres, wounded but dangerous, return to Petco Park to face the Miami Marlins, a team struggling to stay afloat. San Diego is the favorite here, and it’s easy to see why: a deeper roster, a solid pitcher in Randy Vásquez, and an offense that’s capable of hanging fat numbers at any time. The Marlins, meanwhile, have improved recently but remain bottom-tier, especially on the road. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Monday night baseball game between the Padres and the Marlins.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Padres vs. Marlins prediction, preview
Let’s start with the Padres. Randy Vásquez (3-4, 3.49 ERA) has pitched above expectations, but his advanced metrics—xERA (5.57), xFIP (5.72), and SIERA (5.74)—tell a different story. He’s fortunate to have a solid ERA, and it’s only a matter of time before his luck runs out. That said, he still poses a challenge for the Marlins, who sit 21st in wRC+ against right-handed pitchers over the last 30 days. Against a shaky bullpen and an offense that struggles to get going, Miami will find it hard to break through.
Now, look at the Marlins’ starter, Ryan Weathers (1-0, 1.80 ERA). The 25-year-old lefty has been solid in his two starts, allowing just two earned runs across 10 innings, but the sample size is small. Plus, facing a Padres offense led by Fernando Tatis Jr. (12 HRs, .513 SLG) and Manny Machado (.321 BA), this is a steep challenge. The Padres are 60.7% favorites when favored this season and have shown strong home form, particularly when facing below-.500 teams like the Marlins.
Offensively, the Padres have struggled to find consistency but still rank 16th in runs per game. Manny Machado’s resurgence—batting .421 over his last five games with two home runs—gives the Padres a dynamic edge. He’s hitting .321 for the season, and his bat is vital to San Diego’s success in this one. Along with Tatis and Gavin Sheets (31 RBIs), the Padres’ offense should have enough firepower to overpower Weathers’ solid but limited repertoire.
The Marlins, despite flashes of brilliance (think about that walk-off against the Cubs last week!), rank 28th in ERA and 27th in runs allowed. They’re not the type of team to outlast a solid Padres lineup. Kyle Stowers (.309 BA, 10 HRs) and Eric Wagaman (.253 BA) lead the Marlins, but they can only do so much. Weathers can only carry this team so far, especially with the Padres’ pitching depth and home-field advantage working against him.
Marlins vs. Padres pick, best bet
The Padres are 3-1 in their last four games against Miami, and they’ve covered the run line in nine of their last 10 home games against NL East opponents. Miami, on the other hand, has dropped 21 of their last 22 Monday road games, making this an ideal setup for a Padres win.
Looking at the total, the over is tempting, as both teams have seen a higher number of runs in their recent matchups. The Padres have averaged 4.27 runs per game and have shown they can light up weaker pitching, especially at home. Combine that with Miami’s inconsistent pitching and offensive bursts, and the over on 7.5 feels like the play.
Safest, however, to take the Padres moneyline. I expect a decisive win, but -155 on the Moneyline at home is the best value.
Best bet: Padres (-155) vs. Marlins
