Colorado Rockies vs. New York Yankees prediction, pick for Friday 5/23/25

The Yankees have emerged from their recent stretch with a scorching hot hand, winning eight of their last 10. Their bats are blazing, and they come to Coors Field—a hitter’s paradise—ready to feast. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday night baseball game between the Yankees and the Rockies.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Yankees vs. Rockies prediction, preview

The Yankees lead the league in barrel rate and average exit velocity, putting opposing pitchers in a perilous position. We’ll start there! Tanner Gordon, tasked with containing this offensive juggernaut, faces a near-impossible challenge. The Rockies are already reeling, having dropped nine of their last 10, and their pitiful 8-42 season record paints a grim picture. Add to that their woeful strikeout rate and bottom-tier offensive output, and this game feels like a mismatch waiting to unfold.

Clarke Schmidt, for the Yankees, enters with a respectable 4.41 ERA and a solid 1.29 WHIP. He’s been effective in his last few outings, posting three quality starts in a row against tougher lineups like the Padres, Mariners, and Mets. Schmidt’s advanced stats—ranking in the 80th percentile for expected batting average (xBA) and 69th for average exit velocity—suggest he’ll control the game. Schmidt’s mastery of the knuckle curve, which has allowed just three hits and 16 strikeouts over 31 at-bats, should shut down a Rockies lineup struggling to make contact.

The Yankees’ offense, with titanic Aaron Judge leading the charge, has been an absolute monument to the sport. Judge, batting a monstrous .396 with 16 home runs and 44 RBIs, ranks first in nearly every major offensive category, including OPS (.743). Behind him, Paul Goldschmidt’s bat continues to scorch (.337 average), and Cody Bellinger has added solid power numbers with eight home runs. This lineup is designed for Coors Field; the elevation amplifies their power, and they should send Tanner Gordon to an early exit.

Meanwhile, the Rockies’ offense is a far cry from what Coors Field demands. Sitting 29th in batting average (.219) and 30th in on-base percentage (.286), Colorado has virtually no threats in their lineup. Hunter Goodman (.282) and Jordan Beck (eight HRs) are the lone bright spots, but these two can’t carry the team on their own. This will be their toughest challenge yet, facing a Yankees rotation that ranks seventh in ERA (3.42) and fourth in WHIP (1.16). With Schmidt on the mound, the Rockies’ chances of a breakthrough are slim at best.

Rockies vs. Yankees pick, best bet

The Rockies’ pitching is where this game falls apart for them. Tanner Gordon, with a 5.68 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP, simply doesn’t have the stuff to contain New York’s offense. His lone start this season saw him surrender seven runs to the Tigers—an offense nowhere near the level of the Yankees. Schmidt’s advanced metrics—like his 69th percentile whiff rate—should keep the Rockies from generating much offense, particularly in a hitter-friendly park like Coors Field.

The Yankees’ dominance in recent games and the Rockies’ struggles are too stark to ignore. New York is clearly the superior team, and with Schmidt on the mound, they’ll control the game early. The Rockies are too overmatched to put up much resistance, and their defense—ranked 30th in fielding percentage—won’t help matters.

Betting insights paint an even clearer picture: The Yankees have covered the spread in 7 of their last 9 games and are 6-3 against the Rockies in their last 9 matchups. Furthermore, the Rockies have been abysmal as home underdogs, with a 16-34 ATS record. The Yankees have also hit the under in 6 of their last 7 games (86%)—a trend that aligns with their expected dominant performance.

Best bet: Yankees -1.5 F5 (-130)
