Atlanta Braves vs. San Diego Padres prediction, pick for Friday 5/23/25

Atlanta is ready to strike back after a tough extra-innings loss against the Nationals. With the Padres stumbling through a six-game losing streak, Atlanta has a golden opportunity to capitalize on San Diego’s offensive struggles. The Braves’ strong home performance (15-7) and the return of Ronald Acuña Jr. gives them a clear edge tonight. But just how much? Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday night baseball game between the Braves and the Padres.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Braves vs. Padres prediction, preview

San Diego has dropped eight of its last 10 games, scoring a mere 2.5 runs per contest during the slump. This is a major problem against a Braves squad still featuring heavy hitters like Matt Olson, who leads the team with 11 home runs, and Austin Riley, contributing a solid .276 batting average and eight home runs. The Braves have averaged 4.18 runs per game this season, but the return of Acuña should inject life into a lineup that’s been underperforming. Atlanta’s offense has posted a .307 team batting average over the past week, ranking second in the NL behind the Cubs.

Nick Pivetta (5-2, 2.86 ERA) starts for San Diego and has been solid, but his road numbers (1-2, 5.21 ERA) raise some questions. Despite his 56 strikeouts in 50.1 innings, Pivetta’s xERA of 3.57 suggests some luck in his early success. His recent struggles—particularly allowing 4 home runs in his last three starts—don’t bode well against a Braves lineup primed to explode. Pivetta’s 0.99 WHIP is impressive, but his tendency to allow fly balls (39.2% FB%) could be exploited in Truist Park, a known hitter-friendly environment.

On the mound for the Braves is Chris Sale (2-3, 3.62 ERA). While his 1.35 WHIP might seem concerning, Sale’s 72 strikeouts in 54.2 innings and 5.29 strikeout-to-walk ratio still make him a dominant force. He’s been effective at home, with a 1.40 ERA in his last three starts. Against a Padres lineup averaging just 3.5 runs per game in the last week, Sale’s ability to generate strikeouts and limit home runs should be a deciding factor. Sale’s 26 strikeouts over his last three starts show he’s regaining his Cy Young form.

San Diego’s recent form is worrying. With a record of 0-6 in their last six games, they’ve been unable to generate consistent offense. The Padres’ reliance on Tatis Jr. and Machado has been evident, but their overall offensive performance (4.27 runs per game, 16th in MLB) hasn’t been enough to cover for their shaky pitching. San Diego’s 1.19 WHIP and 3.50 ERA don’t match the level of its offense, leaving them vulnerable to extended innings and high-leverage situations.

Padres vs. Braves pick, best bet

The Braves are 6-0 at home after extra-inning losses, and their pitching staff has allowed 3.85 ERA overall, which keeps them in games even when their offense isn’t firing. Recent betting trends also favor the Braves. They’ve covered the run line in each of their last six night games at Truist Park after an extra-innings loss. Atlanta’s 2.72 K/BB ratio is the 5th best in the league, and their bullpen, though prone to some inconsistency, has a 3.79 ERA this season.

In terms of betting trends, Atlanta’s Moneyline is appealing at -178. The Braves have the momentum, and Sale’s dominance gives them a clear edge. San Diego, struggling both offensively and on the mound, looks unlikely to end its losing streak here. With Acuña back, the Braves are positioned for a strong offensive performance, and Pivetta’s home run tendencies make him an easy target for Atlanta’s power hitters.

Acuña’s return adds a game-changing bat, with a .416 OBP and 15 steals in 2024, elevating Atlanta’s offensive ceiling all over the basepaths. His 11.5% barrel rate ranked 13th in the league prior to his injury, and his presence immediately strengthens the Braves’ top of the lineup. And it makes all the difference in terms of the bet, here.

We go from Moneyline to run line. Braves dominate tonight for Acuña’s return. It’s risky. But he’s the difference-maker, here.

Best bet: Braves -1.5 (+130) vs. Padres
