Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians prediction, pick for Friday 5/23/25

The Tigers come into Game 2 with a solid opportunity to even the series after a shocking 7-0 loss. Comerica Park has been a fortress for Detroit this season, and the Tigers are poised for a bounce-back performance. Detroit’s pitching staff ranks among the league’s best with a 3.32 ERA, and Jackson Jobe (4-0, 4.12 ERA) has been a steady presence on the mound. Cleveland, however, is ready to steal another on the road. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday night baseball game between the Tigers and the Guardians.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Tigers vs. Guardians prediction, preview

Jobe’s 7.3 K/9 and .233 batting average allowed are barely indicators of his ability to handle tough lineups. His stuff is unreal. The 1.45 WHIP is a concern, but his strikeout ability (32 Ks in 39.1 innings, and that’s not even close to his ceiling) keeps batters at bay. Though Jobe has walked 22 batters in 39 innings, his strikeouts help mitigate any potential damage. Cleveland’s offense has shown flashes but remains inconsistent, ranking 22nd in runs per game with just 4.0.

Slade Cecconi (0-1, 5.40 ERA) starts for Cleveland and faces a difficult test. He allowed three runs over five innings in his season debut against the Reds, striking out eight but allowing five hits. Cecconi showed potential with an 8.0 K/9 rate. But Cecconi’s 5.94 FIP suggests he was a bit lucky, and his xERA points to potential looming regression. Cleveland has relied heavily on José Ramírez, who has been red-hot, slashing .375 over his last 10 games. But even with Ramírez heating up, Cleveland’s offense has failed to reach the run production needed to back their pitching staff. Their 22nd-ranked offense (4.0 runs per game) will be hard-pressed to exploit Jobe’s mistakes, should he make them.

Detroit’s offense, top-to-bottom, is thriving. They rank fourth in MLB with 5.34 runs per game. Riley Greene (12 HR) and Spencer Torkelson (12 HR) lead a balanced attack that can do damage from leadoff to nine-hole. Detroit’s .331 OBP ranks 12th, and their 4.65 K/BB ratio is among the best in the league. The Tigers’ ability to get on base and generate power puts them in a prime position to take advantage of specifically Cecconi’s struggles. With Jobe on the mound, Detroit’s potent lineup should capitalize on Cleveland’s weaker pitching.

Recent form heavily favors Detroit. The Tigers have won 12 of their last 13 games as home favorites against AL Central teams. On the other hand, the Guardians have failed to cover the run line in four of their last five road games after a win. Cleveland’s pitching staff has been solid but thin, with key injuries affecting their depth. Cleveland’s bullpen ranks 20th in ERA (4.12) and 15th in FIP (4.13), making it hard to close tight games. The Guardians have relied on their bullpen to keep games close, but they face an uphill battle against a team as well-rounded as Detroit.

Detroit’s dominance at home (17-6) has been a key factor in their early success, and Jobe’s consistency has been a major contributor. Jobe’s 2.30 ERA at home this season shows he thrives at Comerica Park. Cleveland will need to rely on a strong outing from Cecconi, but with the Tigers hitting .259 as a team and averaging 5.34 runs per game, that’s a tough ask. Even with a hot José Ramírez and Steven Kwan’s steady production, Cleveland’s lineup doesn’t match up well against Detroit’s firepower.

Guardians vs. Tigers pick, best bet

Tigers have been solid as favorites. They’ve won 73.3% of games when favored this season. Detroit’s 2.12 run margin ranks second in MLB, while Cleveland’s -1.34 run margin indicates a tougher path to victory. The Guardians, meanwhile, have struggled in road games as underdogs, with just a 50% win rate when on the road as a dog this year. The Tigers have covered the run line in 12 of their last 13 games at Comerica Park, while Cleveland has struggled to cover the run line in similar situations.

With Jobe pitching at home and Detroit’s offense poised to break out, it’s hard to see the Guardians keeping pace. Cleveland’s offense is simply too inconsistent, and their pitching depth has been thinned by injury. Detroit’s bullpen ranks fourth in ERA (3.23), ensuring late-game protection with a solid relief core.

Best bet: Tigers (-135) vs. Guardians
