Ryan Gosling to star in Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars: Starfighter

It’s been rumored for some time, but now it is official: Ryan Gosling is Ken-ough for the Galaxy Far, Far Away.

That’s right, Gosling will star in the Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars: Starfighter, set to release on May 28, 2027.

Formally announced at Star Wars Celebration in Japan, StarWars.com notes that Starfighter will be set five years after The Rise of Skywalker and will feature all-new characters. Even better is the news that the movie isn’t just in development — it’s actually in pre-production with filming set to begin in the fall. That’s big and not-so-insignificant news given Lucasfilm’s checkered recent history of announcing movies which never actually make it to the big screen (we’re looking at you, Rogue Squadron).

Along those lines, it was confirmed at Celebration that films by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi and a new trilogy by Simon Kinberg remain in development. The next Star Wars film set to hit theaters will be Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, which has a release date of May 22, 2026.
