A little more than two months after the Aaron Rodgers era in the Big Apple ended with a whimper, the New York Jets have found their new man. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Justin Fields agreed to a two-year, $40 million with the team to be their new signal-caller. The deal includes $30 million in guarantees.
In 10 games (six starts) with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, Fields completed 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdown passes, and one interception. He opened the season as the starting quarterback after Russell Wilson suffered a calf injury in training camp. When Wilson got healthy, he took over the job in Week 7 and held it for the remainder of the season. Wilson is also a free agent.
Fields joins a New York offense that has some bright spots in running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson, although the Jets scored just 19.9 points per game during the 2024 season, the ninth-fewest of any team in the NFL. After posting the league’s eighth-highest sack rate in 2024, he should be better-protected by a New York offensive line that ranked eight spots higher than the Steelers in pass protection, per Pro Football Focus.
