Atlanta Braves vs. Oakland Athletics
The Pick: Braves -2.5 (+110)
Some stars get a second act. No one gets a third act. This is Sale’s third act and it’s better than the sequel. It appeared that Father Time had caught up with the 35-year-old. The expectations weren’t high for the veteran switching teams late in his career. That’s changed. This could be the best season of his career. In May (five starts — 32 innings), Sale struck out 45 (12.6 K/9), walked two (0.56 BB/9) and allowed two runs (0.56 ERA). His dominance does not stop there. His groundball rate was 49.3% and his strand rate was 92.9%.
The Athletics have been dreading this one all week. They’re sleeping in on Saturday. The A’s are arriving at the park late. Perhaps, they’ll visit the Coca-Cola Museum or Atlanta’s Cyclorama — anything to take their minds off baseball. They’re facing a nine-win pitcher with a micro ERA that strikes everyone out. The A’s stink against average southpaws — 88 wRC+, .284 wOBA and 25.4% K-Rate.
Washington Nationals at Cleveland Guardians
The Pick: Nationals +130
This is a dangerous game. The Guardians don’t fool around, but the Nationals are not complete fools. Both teams are similarly disrespected. Mitchell Parker is the perfect representation of these under-the-radar teams.
The Guardians own lefties — fourth-best wRC+. That doesn’t bother Parker. He’s not for sale. No team — no matter the resume — owns him. In eight starts, he’s faced six top-10 teams vs. LHP. Parker is 4-2 with a 3.45 ERA. He’s not the typical southpaw. He’s not the typical modern rookie. Velo and spin rate are not his obsessions. Accuracy is his angle. Parker is a throwback. He’s a modern Greg Maddux. Teams are not familiar with this style. That’s why teams that normally beat up lefties struggle against Parker.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago White Sox
The Pick: Brewers -1.5 (-122)
It’s a southpaw day. There are a lot of lefties taking the mound today. Two will face off in Milwaukee. One will face a team that can’t hit lefties. That’s the better one. Robert Gasser was a second-round pick and former top prospect for the Padres. He was traded to the Brewers in 2022 for elite closer Josh Hader. Gasser worked his way through the ranks and made his Major League debut in May. Through four starts, he’s 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA. His stats don’t stand out, but he eats innings (23 IP) and doesn’t allow runs. That’s the only real job for a pitcher. The job is easy on Saturday. The White Sox have a 70 wRC+ vs. LHP — the worst in MLB. They have a .266 wOBA, .111 ISO and 23.3% K-Rate.
