The NBA news cycle never sleeps — just three days into 2025, Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler appears to be on the trade block following several weeks’ worth of drama.
On the heels of a growing feud, the franchise publicly made the 35-year-old wing available via trade through a statement posted to Twitter/X. It’s yet another bullet point in a long list of bad breakups on Butler’s behalf, but which jersey will he don next if he is, in fact, on the move?
An unfortunate split
In recent months, an apparent rift seems to have grown between Butler and the team he took to two NBA Finals appearances over the last four seasons. Over the summer, Butler said the Heat would have downed the Celtics in the postseason had he been healthy, a statement to which Heat president Pat Riley issued a strongly-worded response that Butler should keep his mouth shut if he hadn’t been on the court.
The somewhat-public feud, and trade speculation, gained more attention when Butler hinted at a potential move by saying his number 22 jersey would look good in purple and gold in June. Months down the line, ESPN insider Shams Charania tweeted that Butler preferred a trade out of Miami to one of several teams, a report Butler’s agent subsequently denied.
Riley said the team would not be moving on from their star player. Just eight days after the Riley’s initial statements, the saga appears to have culminated in a seven-game suspension for what the Heat call conduct detrimental to the team. In the same public post, the franchise said they will listen to offers on their star player.
The 35-year-old Butler, who is in the final guaranteed year of his contract before facing a $52 million player option in 2025-2026, averages 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game this season. He’s not quite the superstar he once was, but with a great free throw-rate and all-around production, Butler clearly still has gas in the tank.
Golden State Warriors
Win Conference (+1200)
The Warriors’ 2022 NBA Finals victory appeared to be the current roster’s swan song before an inevitable regression. Klay Thompson was the first member of the former dynasty’s core to leave, making his way to the Dallas Mavericks over the offseason. Despite Thompson’s departure, the Warriors remain feisty in a loaded Western Conference at 17-16 and maintain postseason hopes with -175 odds to make the playoffs.
Unfortunately, franchise icon Stephen Curry may be feeling the effects of Father Time as he battles statistical regression and injuries at the age of 36. Even still, Curry has made it known he wants to go down swinging and doesn’t want to lose games in the twilight of his career. If the Warriors have an urge to make a splash move and surround Curry with star talent for one final championship push, a move for Butler could prove an attractive option.
A potential trade is almost certain to involve forward Jonathan Kuminga, a young talent blossoming in spite of a looming contract extension. If Kuminga is the centerpiece of a move for Butler, the Warriors would likely improve in the short term, but they would mortgage their future between shipping out the 22-year-old forward and picks, plus other assets, for an aging Butler. While a risky proposition, Butler fits well on the roster and could be the big name the franchise needs to try and help their own aging superstar ride into the sunset with one more ring.
Houston Rockets
Win Conference (+2500)
The Houston Rockets are one of the most intriguing stories around the Association right now. The franchise spent the last several seasons in rebuilding purgatory, but emerged from the talent acquisition phase last season and fast-tracked their road to contention en route to a 41-41 finish. This season, they’ve shown even greater growth and currently sit 22-12, good for third place in the West, though they remain a dark horse to win the conference.
Houston possesses a blend of young talent, productive veterans, moveable contracts, and loads of draft pick capital. Many league insiders cite them as a possible destination for, well, nearly every star who could be on the move via trade in the near future. They’re in position to make such a move, though GM Rafael Stone has said they won’t rush into a blockbuster trade just for just any big name. Supposedly, they prefer to add someone who fits their timeline better such as De’Aaron Fox.
Interestingly, Houston was named among Butler’s preferred destinations in the initial, but later disputed, report he desired a change of scenery. The Miami star would be an upgrade over either of Jalen Green or Dillon Brooks in the starting lineup, and the Rockets have the war chest of assets to make a trade happen. However, it’s difficult to determine whether the front office would empty that war chest for a 35-year-old who may be past his prime, especially if they don’t view themselves as true title contenders.
Phoenix Suns
Win Conference (+2200)
The Phoenix Suns are stuck between a rock and a very, very hard place. The trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal have underperformed relative to expectations with a first-round bounce in last season’s playoffs and a 15-17 record this year, which leaves them sitting 11th in the Western Conference. Yet, they maintain -115 odds to make the playoffs.
Yes, the team’s struggles this season can be attributed to all three of their stars missing multi-game stretches at various points thus far. However, something just seems off in Phoenix. From the time franchise governor Mat Ishbia took over nearly two years ago, he’s showed he’s not afraid to shake up the roster, even if those moves come at a significant cost. Phoenix wants to win at all costs, Durant isn’t getting younger, and they could be getting desperate.
Is a trade to Phoenix the most likely outcome for Butler? Probably not, but there is a caveat. The rumored connection between Beal and the Heat is a long-running flirtation, and the salaries of he and Butler match up well for a potential swap. However, the Suns don’t possess a surplus of draft picks (just two first-rounders through 2031), nor much young talent (and they cannot aggregate salaries with Beal’s contract due to the second apron restriction). While a fun hypothetical, any Butler-to-Phoenix trade would almost certainly require a third team’s involvement and totally deplete the Suns’ already-slim cupboard.
