Devin Singletary injured his groin during Week 4’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. While there’s still some optimism that he could be able to suit up for Week 5, Singletary did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday, and was a limited participant in Friday’s practice. He’s been downgraded to doubtful and if he’s unable to go, Tyrone Tracy Jr. has received 66 snaps on the season and would likely be the guy to handle the bulk of running back duties. Eric Gray has received a total of 15 snaps and would likely slide up to the number two position.
On the season, Tracy has carried 12 times for 29 yards while racking up four receptions for 41 yards. The allure of Tracy is the 4.48 40-speed and 96th percentile agility score in the 5-foot-11, 209-pound frame. He also began his college career as a wide receiver, so he has pass-catching ability.
The Giants have the league’s worst offensive line according the Sharp Football Analysis. The Giants are 6.5-underdogs in Seattle, so the game script will likely not be a favorable one. Good thing Tracy is used to be a wide receiver.
Now, any starting running back is a viable option. Priced at $4,300 on DraftKings, Tracy will likely be one of the most-rostered running backs on the slate if Singletary sits. Singletary received double-digit carries in every contest with a total of 11 targets. But, but, but….
There is uncertainty here. Singletary is a grizzled veteran of six years in the league. Tracy is a rookie, potentially making his first career start in a hostile environment on the road. It’s well within the range of outcomes that he doesn’t receive double-digit carries and a handful of targets, especially since the Giants have thrown to running backs at the fifth-lowest rate in the NFL.
This is not a slam dunk start in my opinion. He should see an increase in volume, but how efficient will those touches be? In addition, it’s not a sure thing that he gets the workload that Singletary received. On DraftKings, the price is so low that it may not matter. The ownership could be high, though, and I have reservations that he puts up a “had-to-have-it” score. It likely comes down to roster construction. For season-long leagues, if you’re contemplating Tracy, your squad is in trouble anyway, so you may as well insert as much volume as you can. Then pray.
