Syracuse Team Breakdown
Syracuse has a lot of offensive firepower but they have struggled on the defensive side of the ball. They are having a decent season with their only loss coming in a weird coin-flip game against Stanford. Kyle McCord has been really efficient at quarterback for the Orange, and has their offense ranked 19th in the country in EPA/pass. They should be able to move the ball effectively through the air in this matchup.
On defense, Syracuse has been middle of the road against both the run and the pass. They are 56th in defensive EPA/pass and 59th in defensive EPA/rush. They have been able to hold up to a degree to help them win a couple of games but they are liable to give up some explosive plays and allow opposing offenses to go on quick scoring bursts.
UNLV Team Breakdown
It has been a wild season for UNLV. They started the season 3-0, including a monumental win over Kansas. Then, their QB announced that he would be leaving the team because of a dispute over his NIL money. In stepped backup QB Hajj-Malik Williams last week against Fresno State, one of the top teams in the Mountain West, and UNLV dominated them from start to finish. Williams is a much better passer than Sluka and the team rallied around their new quarterback.
The UNLV offense is explosive and exciting but they have also been solid on defense so far this season. However, this will be their toughest to date. In retrospect, slowing down the Kansas offense was not as impressive as it seemed at the time. Jalon Daniels and the Kansas offense have been bad all season so it wasn’t necessarily great defense from UNLV that kept them at bay, but their own offensive ineptitude. UNLV is still solid at that side of the ball but Kyle McCord could present an aerial threat they haven’t seen yet.
Pick and Prediction
Both of these teams should have no problem getting into a shootout. Kyle McCord and Syracuse run a very pass-heavy offense and should try to air it out against the Rebels. With Williams at quarterback, UNLV also has a much more pass-heavy approach and should be able to hit a few explosive plays against Syracuse. This game could quickly turn into a track meet with both teams launching downfield. This game will also be played on an NFL field which means better conditions for skill-position players and quarterbacks.
This game could come down to whoever has the ball last so getting 6.5 points with Syracuse is the way to go. I am rolling with the Orange, and also betting the over in this game that could be played with minimal defense.
