On August 27, Jackson injured his right foot after landing wrong from a contested layup attempt. The official diagnosis is a broken fifth metatarsal in the right foot, which is the long bone that connects to the little toe. Surgery is scheduled for September 4 and updates on a return date will be provided after.
Jackson was selected with the 45th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. He’s 6-foot-9 and 210 pounds but fell in the draft due to poor shooting efficiency in college and chatter concerning his maturity issues.
But he showed that he’s a professional getter of buckets at the ripe age of 19 years old.
Jackson played 16 games in the G League and averaged 20.2 points, 2.6 treys and 7.1 rebounds. He only shot 32.3% from downtown, though.
Due to plethora of injuries, he started 18 of 48 games played with the Grizzlies and averaged 14.6 points, 2.1 treys and 4.1 rebounds. He converted 35% of his attempts from downtown.
Entering the 2024 season, Jackson likely wasn’t going to play much with the Grizzlies. Desmond Bane, Vince Williams, and Jake LaRavia will likely man the small forward position while Jaren Jackson Jr. will start at power forward with Brandon Clarke likely soaking up most of the backup minutes. That said, Jackson will lose some developmental reps and foot injuries are always scary for NBA players, since cutting and jumping are vital.
