Never has a team losing an 83rd game gotten so much buzz. Then again, it’s not every day that loss No. 83 comes before the end of July. And somehow, that wasn’t even the story for the White Sox.
Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to the Royals marked the 28th time in which a White Sox reliever has recorded a blown save this season. That’s a massive number, especially at this stage, but it only means so much on its own.
When you look at Chicago’s number of wins, though, those 28 blown saves are amplified. That’s because the White Sox, who are now 110 games into their season, officially have more blown saves than games won.
With 28 blown saves, the White Sox are nine away from tying the single-season record. In 2021, the Nationals blew an all-time worst 37 games. Yet, that’s far from the most significant history Chicago could make this season.
The worst record ever in a full, modern-day, 162-game schedule belongs to the 2003 Detroit Tigers. Despite an All-Star campaign from Dmitri Young (.297 average, .909 OPS, 29 home runs), Detroit could not overcome the pitching staff’s 5.30 ERA.
Even with their 43-119 record in 2003, the Tigers do not have the most losses in a season ever. That belongs to the 1962 New York Mets, who went 40-120 (160 games). Going into Tuesday’s game, the 2024 White Sox were on pace to not just finish worse than the ‘03 Tigers, but also those ‘62 Mets:
The ‘62 Mets finished with a percentage of .250, and the Tigers posted a mark of .265. This year’s White Sox team entered Tuesday with a .248 winning percentage. That number dipped to .245 following the 4-3 loss vs. the Royals.
