Alexander Zverev vs. Tomas Machac

The reigning singles gold medalist is off to a hot start in Paris.
Alexander Zverev has never lost a singles match in the Olympics. He’s also coming off a fantastic French Open campaign less than two months ago and now has the opportunity to make a deep run on the Roland Garros clay once again.
Zverev kicked off his gold medal defense with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Spain’s Jaume Munar, and will now draw the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac. Machac actually has a pretty solid resume on clay this year, notably defeating Novak Djokovic in Geneva. That said, he’s won just two of his last six matches and will now have to face off against the No. 4 player in the world.
Zverev has been nothing short of dominant on this surface over the last calendar year, boasting a ridiculous 81.8% win rate with a dominance ratio of 1.34. His hold rate of 90.2% has been as spectacular as one would expect, but it’s his break percentage that really stands out. In 2024, Zverev’s break rate has dipped down to 20.1%, his lowest since 2015. However, it’s a completely different story on clay, as that percentage jumps back up to 27.6%.
That’s concerning for Machac, who hasn’t been fantastic on clay this year, winning only 67.6% of his first service points. At just 23 years old, it’s impressive that Tomas has already cracked the top 40 and there’s a lot of potential within his game, but I fully expect Zverev to cruise through this match in straight sets and hold him to fewer than nine games won.
