Ladd McConkey is dealing with a cracked rib and is hoping to suit up against Las Vegas, which puts fantasy managers in the uncomfortable spot of weighing a great matchup against a painful injury. He led the Chargers in targets, receiving yards and touchdowns in the opener, and the Raiders have already proven they can be beaten down the field. The question is how much of himself he brings to the field on Sunday. Find out whether you should start or sit Ladd McConkey in Week 2.
Ladd McConkey Start or Sit Advice for Week 2
Start with the role, because it held up. McConkey commanded seven of Los Angeles’ 27 targets for a 25.9 percent share, caught five of them for 82 yards and a score, and took two of the team’s three red zone looks. That was 19.2 PPR points and the clearest evidence yet that he is still the receiver Justin Herbert trusts first. His route running out of the slot is what generates that separation, and it does not require him to win a physical battle to produce.
Las Vegas is the reason to push through some discomfort. The Raiders gave up 220 receiving yards on 27 targets in their opener, an average of 14.7 per catch, while allowing 124 air yards, so they were conceding chunk plays rather than nickel-and-dime gains. They failed to record a sack and the Dolphins moved the ball freely between the 20s. For a receiver whose game is built on winning early in the route and accelerating into space, a defense that concedes yardage in bulk is an appealing draw.
The injury is the variable, and a cracked rib is not something a player shakes off. McConkey works from the slot, which means traffic, contact over the middle and defenders arriving while he is extended. He already carries a smaller frame and does not win contested throws, so an injury that makes contact harder to absorb cuts right at what he relies on. If he plays, expect Los Angeles to manage his snaps and lean on quicker throws rather than asking him to absorb hits downfield.
The Biggest Fantasy Risk for Ladd McConkey in Week 2
He may play and still be limited. Ribs affect breathing, extension and the willingness to work through congestion, and a receiver operating at partial capacity in a crowded room is a bad combination. Tre’ Harris and Quentin Johnston both drew six targets in the opener and David Njoku caught all five of his, so this offense has options if McConkey cannot handle a full workload. Los Angeles also threw only 27 times against 21 handoffs while Herbert took three sacks and posted an 83.7 passer rating. A potential floor scenario here is four targets and 25 yards before an early exit.
Fantasy Outlook for Ladd McConkey in Week 2
McConkey is a Start in Week 2 if he is active. A team-leading target share, first call on red zone looks and a Las Vegas defense giving up chunk yardage through the air is enough to keep him in your lineup as a WR2. Track the final injury report closely and have a replacement ready to go, because a cracked rib is exactly the sort of injury that turns into a late downgrade or a second-quarter exit. If he is ruled out, Johnston and Harris become the Chargers receivers worth a look instead.
