Jonathon Brooks was supposed to take hold of the Carolina backfield this season, and the opener did not cooperate. Chuba Hubbard handled 13 opportunities to Brooks’ five, outscored him by a wide margin and reached the end zone twice, leaving Brooks as one of three backs sharing what was left. He travels to Atlanta this week against a defense that has been firm against the run. Find out whether you should start or sit Jonathon Brooks in Week 2.
Jonathon Brooks Start or Sit Advice for Week 2
The workload is the issue and it is not a small one. Brooks managed four carries for 14 yards, an average of 3.5 per attempt, while Hubbard piled up 49 rushing yards on ten carries and added a receiving score. AJ Dillon matched Brooks’ involvement exactly with five opportunities of his own and was the more efficient runner of the two at 5.6 yards a pop. That is a three-way split rather than the timeshare Brooks was drafted to win, and being the second or third option in a committee is not a foundation for a fantasy lineup.
There is real context behind the light usage. Brooks is working back from two ACL tears in the same knee, and Carolina has every reason to ration his snaps early in the year to keep him upright. He also cleared the injury report entirely this week, which is meaningful news for a player with that history. The encouraging flash came through the air, where he turned his lone reception into 48 yards, a reminder that the explosiveness has not disappeared even if the volume has not arrived.
Atlanta is a middling matchup that leans toward the difficult side in practice. The Falcons held the Steelers to 58 rushing yards on 21 attempts, roughly 2.8 per carry, and did not concede a rushing score. Carolina’s rushing attack rates as a middle-of-the-pack situation, as Bryce Young did his damage through the air in the opener rather than on the ground. A back splitting work three ways against a front playing that well is a difficult sell.
The Biggest Fantasy Risk for Jonathon Brooks in Week 2
He may not get enough opportunities to matter. Brooks produced 7.2 fantasy points in PPR formats in Week 1, and the bulk of that came from a single catch that happened to break long. Strip out that one play and the afternoon was four carries for 14 yards. Hubbard is also the back Carolina trusted near the end zone, taking both scores, so the scoring equity that could rescue a quiet game is currently pointed elsewhere. Add a knee history that gives the staff reason to keep his snaps managed and the path to a useful line gets narrow.
Fantasy Outlook for Jonothon Brooks in Week 2
Brooks is a Sit in Week 2. The talent that made him a coveted prospect is intact, his health is trending the right way, and a bigger role could still materialize as the season unfolds and Carolina gains confidence in his knee. None of that helps you this week against a stingy Atlanta front while Hubbard owns the lead role and the short-yardage chances. Stash him in redraft leagues and wait for evidence that the Panthers are ready to hand him the job.
