The 2026 NFL season finally began last week, so we’ve had our first taste of football. The Week 2 slate isn’t quite as stacked, but there are some interesting games throughout the day, whether for betting or general fandom purposes. One of those is an NFC South tilt between the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons, both of whom dropped the season opener but are looking to bounce back against a division rival.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET. Here’s a preview, prediction and pick for Panthers vs. Falcons in NFL Week 2 on Sunday.
Panthers vs. Falcons prediction, preview
One of these teams looked much better than the other in Week 1, but both ended with a loss in the end. The visiting Panthers did show some promise on the offensive side of the ball, but whether it was a result of playing a soft Chicago Bears defense remains to be seen. The good news is that Carolina put up 37 points with 478 total yards of offense, going 4-for-9 on third downs and moving the ball very effectively. Bryce Young went 23-for-37 but threw for 361 of those yards with three touchdowns, showing a great connection with 2025 late-season breakout Jalen Coker, who finished with eight catches for 138 yards and two scores. Chuba Hubbard expectedly emerged as the top halfback, seeing 13 touches on the day with 87 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns as well. By all accounts, the offense looked quite good.
The problem was the defense. Despite scoring 37 points, Carolina lost the opener while allowing 59 points and 552 total yards to the Bears. Caleb Williams was obviously incredible, but Chicago did most of its damage on the ground with an astounding 291 rushing yards. That was the 18th-worst performance by a run defense since 2016, so it seems the trend we’ve seen of poor Panthers front sevens may continue to be an issue moving forward. The good news is that the Falcons are a lesser caliber of opponent for as long as their backup quarterback is under center – more on that in a moment – but Bijan Robinson may have a field day in the backfield against this defense.
Atlanta also dropped the opening game of its own season, a 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road. The scoreboard doesn’t really show it, but it was a very ugly game. With Tua Tagovailoa injured and Michael Penix Jr. still working his way back from a torn AC, veteran backup Cooper Rush saw the start under center. He went 12-for-22 with just 143 yards, one touchdown and a pair of picks while also taking four sacks. Throwing downfield was practically off the table as Robinson saw 10 targets with eight catches, receiving plenty of checkdowns at the slightest sign of pressure. Drake London only saw five targets and Kyle Pitts saw just one, so changes to the game plan do feel imminent if the offensive line isn’t threatened as much on passing downs.
On the bright side, Atlanta’s defense did play a solid game. The Falcons allowed only 264 yards in total, completely shutting down the run with just 58 of those coming on the ground. Limiting Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle to such little output was certainly a positive sign, and if nothing else, the unit still picked up a pair of sacks even despite a suspension and an injury keeping the top two EDGE talents off the field. The defense was also quite good at preventing conversions, allowing the Steelers to go 3-for-13 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth. There’s something to build on here.
Panthers vs. Falcons pick, best bet
DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Panthers as a -2.5 road favorite against the spread with -155 odds to win on the Moneyline. The Falcons are a +130 home underdog to win outright with the game total set at 43.5 combined points.
The case for a win for either team appears clear. If Carolina’s offense can click like it did last week, the visitors will be in really good shape given the likely stagnant attack on the other side. The Panthers simply don’t have to play their best defensive game to win. Conversely, Atlanta can get this victory if Robinson demolishes the opposing run defense – a real possibility given that he’s the second-best back in the NFL at worst. There’s a pathway for Rush to work as a game manager if he can just avoid the costly turnovers we saw last week, but he needs to get the other pass-catching talents involved. London and Pitts can open things up underneath by commanding defensive attention in the deeper levels of the field.
It’s extremely tough to trust the Panthers’ defense after last week, but it’s also hard to put faith in the Falcons’ offense. With the spread at 2.5 points, this does look like something of a coin flip, but the total is pretty low at just 43.5 points. The over is what stands out here, so long as Carolina keeps pounding and Atlanta pounds the rock.
