Chicago White Sox vs. Houston Astros prediction, pick for Thursday 9/3/26

Given the way things are shaking out, there’s a good chance the White Sox (73-66) and Astros (71-69) meet up during the playoffs. Chicago, currently first in the AL Central, has been the league’s feel-good story of the summer. Houston, despite a shaky first few months, controls its own destiny in the wide-open AL West. Which of these postseason contenders will make a statement this afternoon at Daikin Park?

The Astros are favorites (-163) over the White Sox; the over/under is set at 8.5 runs. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Thursday’s showdown between Chicago and Houston on DraftKings Sportsbook.

White Sox vs. Astros pick, best bet today

  • Astros -1.5 (+120): Brown is finally coming into his own, looking like the ace he was in 2025. It’s a different story for Castillo, among baseball’s worst pitchers this season. A power-laden Astros lineup should slug their way to a big win.

White Sox vs. Astros prediction, preview

Chicago’s most impactful trade deadline move was bringing aboard Luis Castillo. The former Mariners ace has been subpar in 2026, to put it lightly. Over 122.0 innings of work, he’s notched a 5.31 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 106 strikeouts (7.8 K/9). During five starts with the White Sox, he’s on the hook for a 6.45 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. Most troubling, the three-time All-Star has delivered a sky-high 1.7 HR/9 ratio. Although he’s gotten slightly lucky, none of Castillo’s advanced metrics point to a midseason turnaround. He ranks within the 20th percentile or worse in xERA (4.99), xBA (.272), barrel rate (9.6%) and hard-hit rate (42.5%).

Against some of the league’s worst teams, Castillo’s penchant for allowing hard contact wouldn’t be a deal-breaker. That may not be the case this afternoon. The Astros, led by AL MVP favorite Yordan Alvarez, wield one of baseball’s better lineups. They’re 12th in runs scored (633), fifth in home runs (184) and eighth in slugging percentage (.408). That knack for hitting the ball out of the park could come in handy on Thursday. Castillo has thrown a fastball or sinker on 60% of his pitches. Houston batters have recorded a .263/.353/.441 slash line against those two offerings. The veteran has surrendered ten runs over nine innings against the ‘Stros this season (10.00 ERA).

Houston will hand the ball to their ace, Hunter Brown. It’s been another solid, albeit injury-shortened, campaign from the 27-year-old. Over 81.0 innings (15 starts), he’s recorded a 3.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 86 strikeouts (9.6 K/9). In many ways, the right-hander is his own worst enemy; a 4.9 BB/9 ratio isn’t doing him any favors. Still, things are looking up for Brown over the past few weeks. He’s allowed a total of four runs over his last three appearances, logging a 2.08 ERA during that time. The former All-Star is one of the best at limiting homers, due in part to his 95th percentile ground ball rate (55.3%).

The White Sox have been carried all year by their offense, among the sport’s most dangerous units. They’re sixth in runs (660), sixth in home runs (181) and tied for tenth in OPS (.725). Even more concerning for Brown, the South Siders average the American League’s second-most walks per game (3.60). With that being said, much of Chicago’s damage has come against left-handed pitching this season. When facing righties, their middling .715 OPS is only good enough for 15th in baseball. When Brown last battled the Sox on July 25th, he tossed seven scoreless, two-hit innings.

Best Bet: Astros -1.5 (+120)

If he avoids putting extra runners on, Brown should find some success this afternoon. The White Sox are better against left-handers, and they’ve struggled in this matchup before. As for Houston, homers shouldn’t be too difficult to come by against a lackluster arm such as Castillo. A comfortable win for the Astros feels likelier than not on Thursday.
