What happened to Xavier Edwards? Injury updates for Nationals vs. Marlins on 8/30/26

Miami’s September chase took a sudden hit Sunday. Xavier Edwards left the Marlins’ game against Washington with an apparent arm injury.

Jorbit Vivas attempted to steal second during the bottom of the fifth inning. Brian Navarreto’s throw got away, allowing Vivas to reach third on the error. Edwards was covering the bag and appeared to injure an arm while trying to receive the throw. Miami’s training staff examined him for about two minutes before he left the field.

Miami had not announced a diagnosis or identified the injured arm when play resumed. Griffin Conine replaced Edwards, with Javier Sanoja shifting to second and Leo Jiménez moving to third.

Edwards walked in the second inning and flied to right in the fourth. He finished 0-for-1 with a walk, and the game remained scoreless when he departed. Because Edwards completed two plate appearances, he will not qualify for DraftKings Early Exit.

Edwards entered Sunday batting .282 with a .361 on-base percentage, six homers, 51 RBIs, 59 runs, and 20 steals. His 65 walks against 77 strikeouts have made him one of Miami’s steadiest plate-appearance winners.

Miami began Sunday 68-68 and four games behind San Diego for the National League’s final wild-card position. Arizona also sat ahead of the Marlins, leaving little room for a prolonged absence. Sanoja can cover second, while Conine becomes the likeliest beneficiary of additional at-bats. Neither replaces Edwards’ contact, on-base skill, and speed during Miami’s most important month.
