Minnesota Twins vs. San Diego Padres prediction, pick for Friday 8/21/26

Postseason contenders will clash this evening at Petco Park. The Twins (63-65), despite their middling record, have a shot at both the AL Central title and a wild card berth. Sweeping the Braves this week has given Minnesota a momentum boost heading into the stretch run. As for the Padres (68-60), they find themselves in sole possession of the National League’s final wild card spot. Can San Diego defend its home turf on Friday night?

The Padres are favorites (-115) over the Twins; the over/under is set at eight runs. Below, Iโ€™ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Friday’s interleague showdown between Minnesota and San Diego on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Twins vs. Padres pick, best bet today

  • Twins vs. Padres over 7.5 runs (-135): Minnesota has been one of baseball’s better offensive units this season. The same can be said over the past two months for San Diego. Keeping that in mind, these two lineups should find a way to do some damage tonight against mediocre pitching.

Twins vs. Padres prediction, preview

Minnesota’s season has been nothing short of miraculous. After operating as trade deadline sellers in 2025, hopes weren’t high heading into this season. However, a potent offense and adequate pitching has kept the Twins afloat. If there’s a weak link in this rotation right now, it’s Connor Prielipp. The southpaw hasn’t had much success so far, posting a 5.34 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. He has managed to generate some whiffs (9.7 K/9), but that’s been largely undone by poor command (3.7 BB/9). During his most recent outing last weekend, Prielipp coughed up eight runs vs. the Phillies.

If this game took place in late May, Minnesota’s hurler could be poised for a bounce back. However, the Padres have been on an absolute tear in recent weeks. Since July 1st, the Friars are eighth in runs scored (213), eighth in homers (55) and fourth in OPS (.768). Once-struggling hitters such as Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado finally look like All-Stars. Scoring at Petco Park, once a weakness, has turned into a bit of a strength as well. San Diego is averaging 4.84 runs per game at home since the start of July, 11th-best in baseball during that time. If nothing else, the Padres make quality contact; their 40.6% hard-hit rate is sixth-best in the majors. Prielipp’s 41.1% hard-hit rate only ranks within the 31st percentile among qualified starters.

As for San Diego, it’ll be Randy Vasquez toeing the slab tonight. For a pitcher that was once considered little more than a depth piece, it’s been a solid 2026 campaign. However, the Dominican has been losing steam the further we get into this season. After a blistering hot start, Vasquez’s numbers have taken a nose dive. Since the start of June, he’s on the hook for a lackluster 5.51 ERA. Despite some slight improvement as of late, the right-hander doesn’t inspire much confidence. He sits inside the bottom tenth percentile in xERA (5.83), xBA (.292), whiff rate (19.3%), strikeout rate (15.0%) and hard-hit rate (44.1%). Interestingly enough, the 27-year-old has pitched worse at home (4.78 ERA) than he has on the road (3.86 ERA).

The Twins aren’t stacked with household names, but this lineup has been sneaky-good. They’re ninth in runs scored (592), 11th in batting average (.246) and tenth in OPS (.727). Over the team’s previous ten games, five different players (min. 20 plate appearances) have an OPS above .800. That’s without factoring in franchise cornerstone Byron Buxon, who has been slumping in August. Minnesota has recorded a .738 OPS against right-handed pitching this season, second-best in the American League. As an added bonus, the offense has performed slightly better on the road.

Best Bet: Twins vs. Padres over 7.5 runs (-135)

Perception, rather than actual data, might be tilting some bettors towards the under. However, it’s difficult to place much trust in either Prielipp or Vasquez tonight. Minnesota’s offense is built on depth and an ability to hit right-handed pitching. As for San Diego, a star-powered lineup is finally living up to its potential. Given the middling talent on the mound this evening, back the over on Friday.
