A 13-7 slugfest tilted in favor of the Cardinals (56-57) on Monday night. St. Louis, still within four games of a wild card spot, needs every win it can get going forward. As for the Yankees (63-50), a busy (but not too busy) trade deadline has netted the club a pair of hitters. New York is also calling up infielder George Lombard Jr., the team’s top prospect. Will the new-look Pinstripes even this series up at home tonight?
The Yankees are favorites (-192) over the Cardinals, with the over/under set at 8.5 runs. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Tuesday’s showdown between St. Louis and New York on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Cardinals vs. Yankees pick, best bet today
- Yankees -1.5 (+101): St. Louis struggles against left-handed pitching, which isn’t ideal against the red-hot Weathers. After hitting five homers last night, there’s hope this Yankees offense has returned to form. Facing a so-so hurler such as Dobbins at home shouldn’t present a major challenge tonight.
Cardinals vs. Yankees prediction, preview
Taking the hill for St. Louis tonight will be Hunter Dobbins. The right-hander, acquired from Boston last winter, has been up and down for his new club in limited action. Over 33.2 innings pitched, the 26-year-old has delivered a 3.74 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 32 strikeouts (8.6 K/9). He’s allowed at least three earned runs in all but one of his last four appearances. Dobbins’ fastball, which he’s thrown on 32% of his pitches this season, tops out at just over 95 MPH. Against four-seamers at that speed or slower, Yankees batters are slashing .240/.346/.461 this season.
Dobbins has experience in this matchup, notching a 2.45 ERA over two outings vs. New York last season. Still, this is a very different lineup than the one he faced in 2025. Aaron Judge (ribs), Cody Bellinger (hamstring) and Giancarlo Stanton (calf) are all on the injured list. As a unit, the Pinstripes have scored the fifth-fewest runs in baseball since July 1st (104). With that being said, new additions Luis Garcia Jr. (137 wRC+) and Heliot Ramos (100 wRC+) are capable of making an impact tonight. That’s especially true for the former, who led the National League in slugging (.568) prior to being traded from Washington. During Garcia Jr.’s debut on Monday, he clubbed a two-run homer in the seventh inning. As for Lombard, he’ll slot into the eight hole in this lineup tonight. The rookie is a five-tool player, offering a unique power and speed profile.
Ryan Weathers will get the nod for New York, making his 22nd start of the season. All things considered, the former Marlins hurler has been a welcome addition to this loaded rotation. Over 115.0 innings of work, he’s posted a 3.99 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 126 strikeouts ( K/9). During the 26-year-old’s last two outings, against the Phillies and White Sox, he’s surrendered one run combined (0.71 ERA). Despite giving up hard contact, the southpaw possesses a blend of high velocity and terrific command. Weathers sits within the 73rd percentile in strikeout rate (26.1%), walk rate (6.8%) and ground ball rate (46.9%).
St. Louis’ lineup has been carried by All-Stars Jordan Walker (130 wRC+) and Ivan Herrera (109 wRC+). However, it was Alec Burleson that led the way on Monday, slugging a whopping three home runs at Yankee Stadium. The bad news for the Cardinals? This is an incredibly top-heavy offense. The three previously named hitters, plus JJ Wetherholt, are the only members of the active roster with a wRC+ above 100. To boot, the Redbirds own the 11th-lowest OPS against left-handed pitching (.695).
Best Bet: Yankees -1.5 (+101)
After clubbing five home runs on Monday, is this Yankees lineup finally back? Bringing in some much-needed offensive talent against a middling pitcher such as Dobbins should only help. As for the Cardinals, their struggles against lefties can’t be ignored. If Weathers can keep Walker and the middle of this order in check, New York should even things up tonight.
