Two teams headed in opposite directions will meet tonight at Progressive Field. The Mets (47-66) have completed their trade deadline fire sale. What’s left is the husk of a club that once saw itself as World Series contenders. On the other side, the Guardians (57-56) were active on August 3rd. Outfielder Jo Adell, infielder Nathaniel Lowe and pitcher Foster Griffin will hope to bolster a group in possession of the American League’s final wild card spot. Now, these two squads are set to clash on Tuesday for the first matchup in a three-game set.
The Guardians are favorites (-156) over the Mets, with the over/under set at 7.5 runs. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Tuesday’s showdown between New York and Cleveland on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Mets vs. Guardians pick, best bet today
- Mets vs. Guardians under 7.5 runs (-103): Cantillo and Manaea aren’t household names, but both can thrive against subpar offenses. In that regard, both Cleveland and New York check most of the boxes under bettors are looking for.
Mets vs. Guardians prediction, preview
Sean Manaea isn’t an ace; in fact, he’s barely qualified as a starter this season. Still, the 34-year-old is no slouch. He comes into Tuesday’s game with momentum, allowing just three earned runs over his last two appearances. Regardless, this has been a mediocre campaign for the veteran. Over 91.2 innings (nine starts), he’s recorded a 4.42 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 88 strikeouts (8.6 K/9). Manaea sits inside the 25th percentile or worse in fastball velocity (90.6 MPH), whiff rate (21.1%) and barrel rate (9.2%). However, the southpaw remains above average when it comes to limiting walks (2.9 BB/9).
That knack for limiting free passes should come in handy against a disciplined Cleveland lineup. Granted, working the count is one of the few things this group has done well in 2026. The Guardians are 29th in runs scored (446) and 30th in OPS (.680). As of Tuesday morning, it remains to be seen if new acquisitions Adell and Lowe will make their team debuts tonight. If the pair doesn’t suit up in this one, the Guards will be extra-starved for hitting. Four members of the active roster have a wRC+ above 100. As a unit, Cleveland has scored the fourth-fewest runs in baseball (30) over its last ten contests.
As for the home team, Joey Cantillo will get the nod this evening. All things considered, it’s been a breakout season from the Hawaiian. Through 113.2 innings pitched, he’s posted a 3.88 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 124 strikeouts (9.8 K/9). Giving up baserunners is an obvious issue (4.3 BB/9). Still, that looks like the only notable weakness in the 26-year-old’s repertoire. He’s within the 65th percentile in xBA (.228), average exit velocity (87.8 MPH), whiff rate (30.7%) and strikeout rate (25.2%). Cantillo doesn’t toss more than five innings on most nights, but that’s due in part to a solid Cleveland bullpen.
If there was ever a game Cantillo could dominate in, it’s tonight’s contest. The Mets have been a disappointment at the plate, averaging the fourth-fewest runs per game in baseball (4.04). On the road, that number dips to just 3.78. The return of shortstop Francisco Lindor has helped in recent weeks, but that’s counteracted by the loss of superstar Juan Soto (calf). Cantillo’s favorite secondary pitches are the curveball and changeup; he’s thrown one of the two 54% of the time this season. Against those offerings, New York batters own a middling .241/.283/.359 slash line.
Best Bet: Mets vs. Guardians under 7.5 runs (-103)
There’s no logical reason to back either of these lineups tonight. The Mets are absolutely lost at the plate, especially in Soto’s absence. A crafty lefty such as Cantillo should keep this group on its heels. As for Manaea, he’s looked sharp over the past few weeks. That sets him up nicely against one of the sport’s lowest-scoring offenses in Cleveland. Expect a low-scoring affair tonight.
