2026 MLB Trade Deadline Analysis
Padres acquire RHP Casey Mize from the Tigers for LHP Kash Mayfield (6:02 p.m. ET)
You knew Mize was gone when the Tigers held him out of his most recent scheduled start. The second former first-overall pick traded today, Mize has been fantastic in his walk season, posting a 2.70 ERA and a 2.58 FIP. He’s living up to his promise just in time for a massive pay day, and he represents an equally massive upgrade in the Padres’ rotation — which already added Robbie Ray earlier this afternoon. San Diego is currently one game out of the final Wild Card spot in the NL, and it is being aggressive about its intentions to make the playoffs.
Marlins acquire RHP Victor Vodnik from the Rockies for 2B Connor Norby and RHP Aiden May (5:58 p.m. ET)
Vodnik throws a billion miles per hour, and he’s been given a chance to be the Rockies closer each of the past three seasons. He needs a new home. He needs a fresh start. He’ll now be given one in Miami. For his career, Vodnik boasts a 3.97 FIP.
Guardians acquire 1B Nathaniel Lowe from the Reds for RHP Alejandro Rivera (5:58 p.m. ET)
This is not a sexy move by any means, but the Guardians are getting so little from Kyle Manzardo that Lowe is pretty massive upgrade at the position. Over 276 plate appearances this season, Lowe has managed 12 home runs and a 120 wRC+.
Diamondbacks acquire OF Lars Nootbar from the Cardinals for RHP Daniel Eagen (5:49 p.m. ET)
What the Diamondbacks have been running out next to Corbin Carroll in the outfield this season has been malpractice. The team needed an infusion of talent, and they’ve decided that’s Lars Nootbar. Now, I’m old enough to remember when Nootbar was headlining major hypothetical trade packages. He’s no longer quite that guy. Still, he’s a solid defender and he’s got a 108 wRC+ against RHPs. He’s a decent platoon option for a roster lacking one.
Twins acquire RHP Jeff Hoffman from the Blue Jays for LHP Dasan Hill, RHP John Klein and INF Dameury Pena (5:37 p.m. ET)
It’s nice to see Minnesota buying instead of selling. The Twins have been using a closer-by-committee system for a majority of 2026 — though Yoendrys Gomez has recently been pretty consistent in the role. Now Hoffman will be an option in the ninth. The veteran RHP has had an up-and-down campaign in Toronto, though most of that was a poor start caused by a historically poor BABIP. Since the beginning of June, Hoffman owns a 1.21 ERA with a 32.6% strikeout rate. For the season as a whole, he’s got a 99th percentile whiff rate (37.8%). He’ll embrace a new start in a new city.
Guardians acquire LHP Foster Griffin from the Nationals for LHP Will Dion, LHP Josh Hartle, RHP Kendeglys Virguez and OF Nick Mitchell (5:33 p.m. ET)
Last week, there were rumblings that the Nationals were working to extend Griffin — now he’s on his way to Cleveland. Guess we know how those conversations went. Griffin was an All-Star this season, registering a 3.09 ERA over 22 starts. Still, it’s pretty clear that the NPB veteran has benefitted from some luck, namely a .256 opponent BABIP and an 81.4% strand rate. Look for Griffin to take Slade Cecconi’s spot in the rotation, as the Guardians look to lock down a Wild Card spot in the American League.
Red Sox acquire LHP Erik Miller from the Giants for SS Marcelo Mayer (5:20 p.m. ET)
Remember when Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell were going to be leading the charge on the Red Sox for the next decade? That ended fast. The former fourth-overall pick is now headed to San Francisco for leverage reliever Erik Miller. The RHP’s walk rate is astronomical, yet Miller does have huge velocity and upside in his profile. Namely, a 98th percentile opponent hard hit rate (27.4%) combined with a 92nd percentile ground ball rate (52.4%). He could be special if he ever figures out how to throw some strikes.
Brewers acquire RHP Antonio Senzatela from the Rockies for LHP Mark Manfredi and SS Juan Martinez (5:19 p.m. ET)
Unsurprisingly, Senzatela’s stuff has played much better out of the bullpen than in the rotation. In 2026, over 52.1 innings, the veteran RHP sports a 3.61 ERA and a 3.36 FIP. Now he’ll join Milwaukee’s organization and magical pitching lab. I’m a little excited, honestly.
Yankees acquire OF Heliot Ramos from the Giants for LHP Henry LaLane and SS Kaeden Kent (5:10 p.m. ET)
Adding Ramos and Luis Garcia Jr. to this roster does seem like asking for defensive trouble. That said, the Yankees are desperate for some help scoring runs — particularly if that help is right-handed and can hit southpaws. New York ranks 28th in the league in wOBA (.286) over the last 30 days. It’s getting bleak. For his part, Ramos owns a .292 average and a 127 wRC+ off LHPs in 2026. At the same time, overall, he’s got a 0.20 BB/K ratio and a 15th percentile chase rate (36.7%). He’s not going to fix every problem.
Red Sox acquire OF Eli White from the Braves for RHP Tyler Uberstine (5:07 p.m. ET)
White’s a classic fourth or fifth outfielder. He’s got some speed. He’s got the ability to play multiple positions. He’s got a 106 wRC+ against LHPs this season. Ho hum.
White Sox acquire C Joey Bart from the Braves for RHP Duncan Davitt (4:51 p.m. ET)
Bart’s never lived up to his billing as the second-overall pick in 2018, but he’s probably better than the Drew Romo and Edgar Quero tandem that the White Sox are currently trotting out behind the dish. Until Kyle Teel gets off the IL, Bart should be getting consistent at-bats.
Rays acquire RHP Tyler Wells from the Orioles for RHP Michael Forret (4:51 p.m. ET)
Wells has thrived after a move to the bullpen, pitching to a 2.67 ERA and a 3.21 xERA in 43 appearances in 2026. He’ll now join former teammate Bryan Baker in the back-end of the Rays’ bullpen.
Cubs acquire RHP Clay Holmes and OF Tyrone Taylor from the Mets for SS Jefferson Rojas (4:45 p.m. ET)
The Cubs are all in. If they weren’t before, they definitely are now, after shipping no. 2 prospect Jefferson Rojas to the Mets for Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor. Holmes is such an interesting trade chip. Converted back to a starter in 2025, the veteran owns a 3.26 ERA and a 3.89 FIP over 200+ innings the past two seasons. However, he’s also been on the IL since mid-May. Holmes clearly has value, I’m just a little surprised his price tag was so much higher than Kevin Gausman’s, who Chicago traded for on Sunday night.
Astros acquire OF Daulton Varsho from the Blue Jays for RHP Spencer Arrighetti (4:10 p.m. ET)
Varsho was supposed to have a big season. Not only was it a contract year for the veteran outfielder, but Varsho was coming off a truncated campaign in 2025 where he managed 20 home runs and a .310 ISO in just 271 plate appearances. Expectations were high. Instead, the 30-year-old has mostly disappointed. Varsho has eighth percentile average exit velocity (86.1) and a 14th percentile expected wOBA (.292). He’s also been less effective in center, where his surgically repaired right shoulder has destroyed his arm strength. He still grades out well by OAA, and the Astros need some left-handed bats, but Varsho hasn’t even hit a home run since June 23.
Cubs acquire RHP Ryan Zeferjahn from the Angels for C Moises Ballesteros (3:46 p.m. ET)
Zeferjahn has a big arm. However, like many former minor league starters that end up in the bullpen, Zeferjahn sometimes doesn’t know where that big arm is throwing the ball. In 51.2 innings in 2026, the RHP has struck out 33.5% of opponents while walking 14.3%. To cut straight to the point, if the guy who can touch 100 can ever develop some control, he could be very, very scary. Zeferjahn also has a little bit of closing experience. So that’s nice.
I’m still a little shocked that the Cubs gave up Moises Ballesteros, though. The 22-year-old has 241 plate appearances at the MLB level, so he’s no longer considered a “prospect” in Chicago’s system, but we’re not that far removed from Ballesteros seeming like a foundational piece of the organization. Ballesteros isn’t currently tearing it up at Triple-A, but he’s been a beast in Iowa in 2024 and 2025. He’s a great left-handed bat for the Angels, who will likely immediately get him into the lineup.
Brewers acquire RHP Dustin May and LHP JoJo Romero from the Cardinals for OF Alexander Frias and OF Josiah Ragsdale (3:13 p.m. ET)
The Cardinals experience with Dustin May was textbook. They acquired him as a distressed asset at a low-cost, now they’ve flipped him in the course of their rebuild. Perfectly played. May’s been really good this season, too. Among pitchers with at least 100 innings thrown in 2026, May’s 3.14 FIP is the 13th-best mark in the sport. Probably didn’t hurt his case when he pitched five scoreless innings against the Cubs his last time out, giving up only a single base hit.
Romero is currently injured, but expected to return sometime in August. He’s been a staple in the back-end of the Cardinals’ bullpen for the past three seasons, even picking up eight saves in 2025.
Cubs acquire LHP Braxton Garrett from the Marlins for 1B Jonathan Long and RHP Jace Beck (3:13 p.m. ET)
It’s really difficult to access Garrett’s trade value. The former seventh-overall pick has never really stayed healthy or been available at the MLB level aside from 2023, and that’s very much been the case in 2026, with Garrett limited to just 4.1 innings with the Marlins. Still, he has made 15 starts in Triple-A Jacksonville, and he’s maintained a 2.90 ERA. The Cubs rotation needed help. They got a solid floor with Kevin Gausman, now they’re shooting for some upside with Garrett.
Pirates acquire RHP Luke Weaver from the Mets for SS Sammy Stafura (3:10 p.m. ET)
The Pirates are a game below .500 and 3.5 games back in the NL Wild Card hunt, but it’s refreshing to see their front office push for the playoffs at the deadline. Weaver owns a 1.84 ERA and a 2.84 xERA in 2026, and though a .204 opponent BABIP seems a little unstable, I’d assume the veteran will take over closing duties from Gregory Soto, who has been inconsistent in the role the past few months. Along with Mason Montgomery and the newly acquired Camilo Doval, Pittsburgh has some real firepower in the back-end of its bullpen.
Red Sox acquire C Adley Rutschman from the Orioles for C Carlos Narvaez, RHP Anthony Eyanson, RHP Kyson Witherspoon, OF Enddy Azocar and PTBNL (2:45 p.m. ET)
Three-time All-Star Adley Rutschman, who has been on the IL with a wrist injury since July 18, is staying in the AL East. The Orioles have dealt the former No. 1 overall pick to the Red Sox. Rutschman is arbitration eligible one final time in 2027, though it feels like Boston will be working to get a long-term extension done with the backstop.
The writing was kind of on the wall with this one, at least as soon as Baltimore gave Samuel Basallo an eight-year contract at the start of 2026. Rutschman hasn’t quite lived up to the lofty promise that some envisioned for the now 28-year-old back in 2022 and 2023, but he’s still a heck of a player when healthy. This season, Rutschman has shown both amazing contact skills and incredible defensive value behind the dish, as illustrated by a 91st percentile whiff rate (15.8%) and a 100th percentile caught stealing above average (5). When he’s able to come off the injured list, Rutschman will fill what has been a massive positional void for a red-hot Red Sox squad.
In terms of the return package, the deal is centered around Anthony Eyanson, who is currently dominated Double-A to the tune of a 1.69 ERA with legitimate swing and miss stuff. That’s why he’s a top 50 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. Witherspoon and Azocar are also top five prospects in Boston’s system. The Orioles got a haul.
Dodgers acquire LHP Kris Bubic from the Royals for RHP Carlos Duran (2:16 p.m. ET)
Bubic hasn’t thrown a pitch in MLB since May 14 due to elbow soreness — not ideal — but he has made a couple rehab appearances the past two weeks. He could be ready to return sometime in mid-August. The 28-year-old struggled to a 4.53 xERA when healthy in 2026, but let’s not forget Bubic’s extremely successful 2025 campaign. That’s when the former 40th-overall pick maintained a 2.55 ERA and a 2.89 FIP across 20 starts and 116.1 innings of work. Between Bubic and Skubal, the Dodgers now have roughly a million starting pitchers in their organization. You have to wonder if the team has doubts that Shohei Ohtani or Tyler Glasnow will pitch again this year.
Padres acquire LHP Robbie Ray from the Giants (1:59 p.m. ET)
Ray’s $115 million contract comes to an end this season, and while the left-hander hasn’t really been able to stay healthy the past half-decade, Ray’s been a perfectly serviceable mid-rotation piece when available. In 2026, Ray sports a 3.08 ERA that’s undercut by a 4.36 FIP. The reason for the nearly run-and-a-half difference? Look no further than an unsustainable .259 opponent BABIP and an 11.1% walk rate. Still, Ray’s got a 1.09 ERA dating back to June 16. This is a massive upgrade for a Padres club that had been rolling out the likes of Walker Buehler and Griffin Canning.
Rays acquire C Liam Hicks from the Marlins for INF Brayden Taylor, RHP Jacob Kisting and SS Adrian Santana (1:59 p.m. ET)
Hicks really does feel like a Rays-type player, though I’m curious why the Marlins were so giddy to give up an asset that won’t even reach arbitration until 2028. Hicks is having a breakout season, hitting .282 with 14 home runs and a 119 wRC+ across 409 plate appearances. He’s also struck out (39) fewer times than he’s walked (40) so far in 2026. His bleak numbers against left-handed pitching suggest he’s a platoon bat, especially if he’s situated at first base, yet it’s not like Kevin Cash hasn’t made a living off of exploiting splits to his advantage.
Blue Jays acquire INF Josh Smith and Josh Stephan from the Rangers for LHP Adam Macko (1:39 p.m. ET)

Heading into 2025, Smith sort of felt like the left-handed Ernie Clement, so it makes a little bit of sense that he’d have some appeal to the Jays’ front office. That said, Smith is having a hellish 2026, slashing .213/.299/.272 with a 65 wRC+. He had been optioned to Triple-A by the Rangers on July 31.
White Sox acquire OF Brenton Doyle from the Rockies for RHP Mason Adams and SS Carlos Vielma (12:53 p.m. ET)
You know what the White Sox needed? An oft-injured, Gold Glove caliber center fielder who struggles to make contact and is a couple years removed from his one fantastic season. Brenton Doyle will now fill the vacant Luis Robert Jr. role in the south side of Chicago, I guess.
Doyle has been injured for a majority of 2026, yet he did come off the IL on Friday. In 129 plate appearances this season, the 28-year-old is slashing a horrendous .214/.287/.282 with a .248 expected wOBA.
Mariners acquire OF Taylor Ward from the Orioles for RHP Alex Hoppe, RHP Brock Moore and RHP Harrison Kreiling (12:25 p.m. ET)
It’s a little funny that the Orioles, who are just 0.5 games back of the Mariners in the Wild Card standings, are trading their leadoff hitter to Seattle. That said, Baltimore is 11.5 games back in the AL East. The Mariners still have a shot in their division, hence their role as buyers on Monday.
As for Ward, he’s in the middle of a very odd season. The veteran outfielder’s overall offensive profile has benefitted from Ward leading the league in walks (87) and posting a healthy .383 OBP, yet Ward’s .100 ISO is a career-low, and looks especially odd on the heels of hitting 36 home runs in 2025. Don’t expect calling T-Mobile Park home to aid in Ward re-finding his power stroke. That said, Seattle’s .290 wOBA against LHPs this season is 29th in MLB. They needed a new element from the right-hand side.
Guardians acquire OF Jo Adell from the Angels for C Jacob Cozart (12:19 p.m. ET)
The Angels’ fire sale continues, this time with Jo Adell moving to Cleveland. The 27-year-old outfielder is having a disappointing season after smashing 37 home runs in 2025, yet inconsistency is sort of the book on Adell at this point. Formerly the 10th-overall pick in 2017, Adell has managed a 90 wRC+ over 2,099 plate appearances with Los Angeles. Even last year, with a .249 ISO, Adell was only able a 112 wRC+. However, that came in tandem with 99th percentile bat speed (77.6), a 97th percentile expected slugging rate (.549) and a 96th percentile barrel rate (17.3%). The expected stats and his barrel rate have fallen off a cliff in 2026, yet if you’re looking for positives, the bat speed has remained.
Cleveland ranks 27th in home runs (109) and 28th in ISO (.139). For the cost of their 18th-highest ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, this is an organization that can be forgiven for taking a chance on Adell’s power upside.
Dodgers acquire C Ben Rortvedt from the Mets for RHP Chayce McDermott (11:41 a.m. ET)
Nothing too notable. The Dodgers needed a veteran back-up backstop with Will Smith (neck) on the IL, while McDermott was designated for assignment on July 31. Rortvedt has a 62 wRC+ in his career. He’s a classic glove-first depth catcher.
Braves acquire LHP Brent Suter from the Angels for 3B Nacho Alvarez Jr. (11:27 a.m. ET)
We’ve got a run on late-30s southpaw relievers. The Braves have added the 36-year-old Suter from the Angels, who is in the midst of a season where he’s managed a 4.12 ERA and a 3.65 FIP. Suter does give Atlanta a bullpen arm that can go multiple innings, yet a left-handed reliever didn’t really seem like an area of need for the club, especially with how good Dylan Lee and Dylan Dodd have pitched in 2026.
Phillies acquire LHP Brooks Raley from the Mets for RHP Luke Gabrysh and OF John Spikerman (9:49 a.m. ET)
Pretty standard deadline day deal here. The 38-year-old Raley is in the final year of his contract and he’s pitching to a 1.96 ERA in 45 appearances this season. Meanwhile, the Phillies’ 4.40 bullpen ERA ranks 24th in the league. They can use some help.
Phillies acquire 2B Luis Arraez and RHP Caleb Kilian from the Giants for RHP Ramon Marquez and RHP Marty Gair (9:46 a.m. ET)
Arraez remains a polarizing player given the disparity between his elite contact ability and his lack of any power whatsoever. However, the veteran certainly increased his value by becoming a Gold Glove caliber defender at second base seemingly out of nowhere, as Arraez sports a 98th percentile mark in outs above average (11) in 2026. Arraez’s skill set also fills the needs of a Philadelphia squad that has struggled to consistently generate offense. The Phillies come into the day sitting 24th in batting average (.237) and seventh in strikeout rate (23.6%). Conversely, Arraez’s .324 average is the best qualified mark in the NL, while he ranks in the 100th percentile in whiff rate (7.9%) and strikeout rate (4.5%).
Marquez is the key name on his way to San Francisco in the return package. Just 20-years-old, Marquez feels like a player that will be on Top 100 prospect lists quite soon. The RHP has split time between Low-A and High-A in 2026, and in the latter, Marquez has registered a 1.50 ERA and a 5.1 K/BB ratio in six starts.
Blue Jays acquire RHP Jose Soriano from the Angels for SS Arjun Nimmala, OF Eddie Micheletti and RHP Angel Rivero (9:31 a.m. ET)
This might be a head-scratcher for some, as the Jays signaled their intent to sell on Sunday night by moving RHP Kevin Gausman to the Cubs. However, this is a case of Toronto getting a jump on some 2027 offseason business. The Jays lacked controllable starting pitching depth beyond Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce and Trey Yesavage — and maybe Jose Berrios — and now they’ll have Soriano under contract until the end of 2028. The 27-year-old is in the midst of a breakout campaign, posting a 3.29 ERA and a 24.9% strikeout rate over 22 starts and 123.0 innings. Soriano’s numbers have regressed since allowing just a single earned run across his first six outings of 2026, but the combination of a 90th percentile ground ball rate (52.3%) and an 89th percentile whiff rate (31.4%) is quite alluring.
In return, the Angels will receive a package centered around prized infield prospect Arjun Nimmala. Still just 20-years-old, Nimmala was the 20th-overall pick in the 2023 Draft, and he’s already reached Double-A despite some injury setbacks. Nimmala appears to have the tools to stay at shortstop, yet he also possesses the raw power to be a capable bat at third base. In 138 plate appearances at Double-A, Nimmala is hitting .279 with a 114 wRC+. Per MLB Pipeline, he’s the no. 43 prospect in baseball.
