Seattle Mariners starter Emerson Hancock left Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays after a frightening first-pitch sequence at Tropicana Field. Yandy Díaz sent a 107.2 mph comebacker up the middle, and Hancock deflected it with his pitching hand before gathering himself and throwing to first for the out. MLB’s video page lists the play as Hancock recovering to make the throw, with Díaz’s ball measured at 107.2 mph and traveling only 13 feet.
Hancock also fell hard on his pitching shoulder while finishing the play. He stayed in the game, retired the Rays in order, and even struck out Junior Caminero before the inning ended. MLB’s player page lists his final line at one inning, no hits, no runs, no walks, and one strikeout.
The Mariners removed Hancock before the second inning after trainers checked on him again. Hancock appeared frustrated by the decision, which tracks with the first inning itself. He had taken the hardest contact of the game off his body, then still got through the inning cleanly.
Seattle had not announced an official diagnosis as of the live update. That leaves two obvious areas to watch: the pitching hand that took the deflection and the pitching shoulder he landed on while making the throw. Hancock has prior shoulder history, including a right shoulder strain that ended his 2023 season and a right shoulder impingement in the minors.
The timing is rough for Seattle. Hancock entered Sunday at 6-4 with a 3.23 ERA, then lowered his season ERA to 3.17 after the scoreless inning. His 2026 line now sits at 18 starts, 99.1 innings, 94 strikeouts, and a 1.00 WHIP.
He was also rolling before this start. Over his last three outings, Hancock has allowed one earned run across 13.2 innings with 12 strikeouts. He threw seven shutout innings against Toronto on July 5, allowing two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
