At this World Cup, several legends have already waved goodbye to their national teams. Guillermo Ochoa announced his international retirement after a brief cameo in Mexico’s final group stage match, and Luka Modriฤ officially ended his career with the Croatian national team on Thursday night when the Blazers were eliminated. Son Heung-min hasn’t yet walked away from the South Korean national team and seems likely to play in next January’s Asian Cup, but it would be a surprise if he participated in the 2030 World Cup.
Today’s 2 p.m. ET match between Australia and Egypt could be the last World Cup appearance for Mohamed Salah, arguably the greatest African player of all time. Salah is 34 years old, making him 38 by the time the 2030 World Cup begins, if the Pharaohs qualify. He’s dealing with a minor injury, but he’ll start on the right wing this afternoon for Egypt. The winner will go on to face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the Round of 16.

106′: We’re back for the second half of extra time! Notably, Omar Marmoush has come off for Egypt, and 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim has come on. Marmoush hasn’t had a great tournament, but the Manchester City man might be the most talented pure striker on the team, so that’s a surprising substitution.
HT (105′): 15 MORE MINUTES UNTIL PENALTIES! For some context, the Pharaohs lost penalty shootouts in each of the past two Africa Cup of Nations, while the Socceroos won one in the Asian Cup Round of 16 in 2019.
105′: Haissem Hassan has now received a yellow card or grabbing Aziz Behich’s jersey…and somehow, it’s the first card of this game! There have been plenty of fouls, as it’s been a physical contest, but the referee has left the cards in his pocket.
103′: So far, there have been only two shots so far in this extra period, Salah’s miss and one just now from Ashour that never went anywhere near the target. Are both of these teams just waiting until penalties?
97′: That was a great ball by Adam Okon-Engstler to find Mo Tourรฉ on the run by the top left corner of the 18-yard box! He didn’t make anything of it, as an excellent block from Egypt denied him, but that’s still the sort of attacking aggression that Australia fans would surely like to see.

88′: And now Mostafa Shobeir made a great punch of his own to clear the danger after a few minutes of relentless Aussie pressure! HOW WILL THIS GAME FINISH?
86′: Haissem Hassan just sent in a nice cross towards the back post, but Patrick Beach, who hasn’t had much to do, made a great decision to punch it out! That could’ve been a dangerous opportunity for the Pharaohs, but better goalkeeping on the part of the Socceroos’ leading man.
81′: That was a decent headed effort by Harry Souttar, and that’s exactly the player Australia wanted attempting a header! At six-foot-six, Souttar is one of the tallest center-backs in the world.
79′: This has been a tiring match, and even in the indoor stadium, the heat is getting to players. Karim Hafez has gone down with a cramp. He’s been replaced by Trezeguet.
74′: Australia has now made two substitutions, as Nestory Irankunda and Cristian Volpato have come off for Mo Tourรฉ and Ajdin Hrustiฤ. Irankunda has had a quiet performance, so that substitution looks like it could give the Socceroos more of a presence up front.
73′: That was a poor effort there by Emam Ashour. This game seems headed for extra time!
67′: Over the fast few minutes, Egypt has tried to send it in multiple times to Salah, but it has still failed to find his magical left foot. Hossam Hassan has now made two substitutions, replacing Hamdi Fathy with Hossam Abdelmaguid and Mostafa Zico for Haissem Hassan. The substitutes will have 20 minutes, plus stoppage time, to find a winner for the Pharaohs!
63′: Salah’s first major involvement…an offsides call.
59′: Salah got a touch at the top of the box after a nice solo move by Omar Marmoush, but Australia’s defense shifted back nicely to deny him even a shot attempt. Had the captain been more decisive, he might’ve gotten a shot away, but his poor afternoon continues.
55′: OH, THE SOCCEROOS HAVE DONE IT! THEY ARE LEVEL! AFTER A FREE KICK ALONG THE LEFT WING, AIDAN O’NEILL WHIPPED IN AN EXCELLENT CROSS, AND MOHAMED HANY HEADED IT INTO HIS OWN NET FOR HIS SECOND OWN GOAL OF THE TOURNAMENT! 49′: Mohamed Hany had gone down after a head-to-head collision, requiring medical treatment, so he’ll now have to go to the sideline for a minute. As of now, it appears he’ll stay in the game.
47′: In other news, Kai Trewin replaced Jordy Bos at halftime after the injury that Bos suffered right before the halftime whistle, so now Australia is down one of its best players.
46′: THE SECOND HALF JUST KICKED OFF, AND OMAR MARMOUSH RECORDED AN INTERCEPTION AT THE EDGE OF THE BOX, BUT HE SENT IT WIDE OF THE POST! THAT COULD’VE EFFECTIVELY ICED THE GAME FOR EGYPT!
HT: Jordy Bos went down after a challenge, and while he’s receiving treatment, the referee will signal for halftime! So far, the match stats have been relatively even, as the Socceroos have managed five shots (one on target) worth 0.28 expected goals and the Pharaohs three shots worth 0.41 expected goals, but most importantly, it’s EGYPT 1, AUSTRALIA 0 on the scoreline! Egypt is now -230 (-500 to advance) on the Moneyline, and Australia is +1000 (+360)!
45’+3: Australia tried to curl one in for Irankunda, but for what he has in speed, he lacks in height. The five-foot-nine Tanzania native just barely grazed the ball with his hair, which wasn’t nearly enough power to challenge Shobeir.
45’+2: That was a pretty poor effort by Cristian Volpato. He did a good job setting up a look from near the edge of the box, but his left-footed shot didn’t curl nearly enough and comfortably missed wide of the far post. Still, it’s promising that the Socceroos have managed to get these opportunities.
41′: Egypt managed to win a free kick along the right wing after Jordy Bos fouled Emam Ashour, and while that didn’t turn into anything, that was Salah’s biggest involvement of the game so far. It was the former Liverpool man who took the free kick, laying it back to Ashour.
35′: That was probably the best shot of the game for Australia, as Irankunda managed to recycle one back out to Aziz Begich, who fired one with his left foot towards the near post! Shobeir got to it with a dive, but the more the Socceroos can get their wunderkind involved, the better!
33′: The Socceroos won a free kick after a foul against Nestory Irankunda, but it didn’t turn into much, only a weak dribbler that ended up in Shobeir’s arms.
28′: Australia will need to find a way to get 20-year-old Nestory Irankunda, who scored its opening goal against Turkey, into open space, but so far, that space hasn’t been available. It’s been a very promising performance from Egypt’s defense so far.
23′: The hydration break is a welcome sight for the Socceroos. They haven’t scored since the second half of the opening match against Turkey, so they’ll need the three minutes for tactical discussion as they hope to keep their (and the AFC’s) tournament alive.
21′: That was another great through ball right over the top of Australia’s defense! Zico put it wide of the mark, though.
16′: The Pharaohs nearly made it two! Omar Marmoush got a great look after a solo run, but Harry Souttar was there to help save Australia from a daunting early hole!
13′: EGYPT STRIKES FIRST! THE PHARAOHS LEAD 1-0! AFTER A FREE KICK NEAR THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BOX, SALAH LEFT IT FOR EMAM ASHOUR. AFTER HIS ORIGINAL SHOT WAS BLOCKED, IT WAS RECYCLED BACK TO ASHOUR NEAR THE EDGE OF THE SIX-YARD BOX, AND HE BEAT PATRICK BEACH TO THE NEAR POST! WHAT A GREAT CROSS BY KARIM HAFEZ TOO!
11′: That was very nearly a mistake by Egyptian goalie Mostafa Shobeir, as he decided to dribble around in his own box with the speedy Nestory Irankunda charging. He got it out, but it’s emblematic of what’s been a fairly shaky performance from the Pharaohs so far.
6′: Ramy Rabia made an excellent slide tackle to deny Jordy Bos of what could’ve easily been a goal! So far, it’s the Socceroos on the front foot, which wasn’t necessarily the expectation before the match!
5′: WOAH, AUSTRALIA ALMOST SCORED ALREADY! CRISTIAN VOLPATO FIRED A LEFT-FOOTED SHOT FROM OUTSIDE THE BOX, AND IT GRAZED THE TOP OF THE BAR BEFORE GOING OVER! WHAT AN EXCELLENT START FOR THE ITALIAN-AUSTRALIAN DEFENDER!
1′: We have action in Dallas! Mohamed Salah is starting at right wing for Egypt, but he’ll have to wait to touch the ball for at least a little bit, as Australia will start with possession. The Socceroos are the last hope for both the Asian Football Confederation and the continent of Oceania, while the Pharaohs would be the second African team in the Round of 16.
